Dreier ran the Paramount art department in the era when every studio had an in-house staff of artists and researchers to guarantee the visual authenticity of its productions.
Arriving in the United States in 1923, Dreier was part of the first wave of German artists who emigrated to Hollywood in the 1920s.
Dreier also hired and nurtured the next generation of talent for what became known as “Dreier’s College” of future art directors, many of whom are represented in this exhibition, including Roland Anderson, Franz Bachelin, Ernst Fegté, Wiard Ihnen, Boris Leven and others.

Began his film career with UFA in 1919, was art director for 5 films, and came to the US four years later.
Dreier was skilled at creating foreign locales on the studio lot, a talent frequently drawn on by European directors such as Josef von Sternberg, Rouben Mamoulian and Ernst Lubitsch.
He was head of Paramount's design department from 1928 to 1951 -- with almost 450 films in his filmography -- including the sets for eleven Cecil B. De Mille films between 1933 and 1949.

Meetings with ghosts, zombies, and all manner of spooky phenomena occur, allowing Hope ample space to demonstrate his customary capacity for cowardice and alarm.
But although the general situation is much the same as in The Cat and the Canary, it works better here because the film provides thrills as well as laughs, thanks to Marshall's deft and delicate direction, Charles Lang's shadowy camerawork, and Hans Dreier's authentically Gothic art direction.
