 Literary Encyclopedia: Hans-Georg Gadamer
Hans-Georg Gadamer, one of the most important thinkers of the twentieth century, transformed the art of hermeneutics by making it philosophical and, in doing so, he showed that philosophy is essentially hermeneutics.
Gadamer argues that the interpretations derived from such understandings always involve a fusion of the familiar and the utterly foreign, and his model for the way understanding leads to interpretation is dialogue, or conversation.
Hermeneutics is the study of the principles of interpretation, and Gadamer’s achievement was to show that all interpretations are derived from a basic level of understanding, or pre-judgment, that is neither an inner realm of subjective meaning nor a universalizable method or technique.

 Hans-Georg Gadamer
Gadamer was twice married: in 1923, to Frida Kratz (later divorced), and, in 1950, to Käte Lekebusch.
Gadamer takes play as the basic clue to the ontological structure of art, emphasizing the way in which play is not a form of disengaged, disinterested exercise of subjectivity, but is rather something that has its own order and structure to which one is given over.
Gadamer's commitment to the historically conditioned character of understanding, coupled with the hermeneutic imperative that we engage with our historical situatedness, means that he takes philosophy to itself stand in a critical relation to the history of philosophy.

Reader-response criticism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This last approach, sometimes called "reception aesthetics" rather than "reader response," is the approach taken by some followers of Hans-Georg Gadamer, most notably Jauss.
Some take the position that there is no objective literary text at all, that the entire meaning of a literary work is in the reader's mind, and that the reader's personal biography, physical status, and psychology lay therefore at the center of a literary text.
Still others argue that the psychological effects of a literary event reveal the fringes of a culture's ideology, so that the reactions to literary works can be a tool for historical analysis.

Hans-Georg Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics is sometimes taken as a version of relativism about truth.
Other interpreters like Brice R. Wachterhauser reject the claim that Gadamer's hermeneutics is “beyond metaphysics” and argue that that there is a complex and many-sided connection in Gadamer's work between hermeneutics and classical metaphysics.
This interpretation has arisen, partly, from Gadamer's thought being classed as post-metaphysical, whatever that might mean.
