Hans-Hermann Hoppe (born September 2, 1949) is an Austrian school economist, an anarcho-capitalist (libertarian) philosopher, and a professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Hoppe is currently Professor of Economics at University of Nevada, Las Vegas, a Distinguished Fellow with the Ludwig von Mises Institute, and, until December, 2004, the editor of the Journal of Libertarian Studies.

A Theory of Socialism and Capitalism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Theory of Socialism and Capitalism is a treatise by Hans-Hermann Hoppe, a student of Jürgen Habermas, which uses the ethics of argumentation, a Habermasian principle, as the foundation for self-ownership and private property as social principles.
Professor Hoppe defined a contract as the consensual use of another's property, aggression as the non-consensual use of anothers property, and capitalism as institutionalized respect for property rights (and contract).
Published in 1989, the book helped elevate Hoppe to a position of leadership within the anarcho-capitalism movement, second only to his mentor Murray Rothbard.

 History News Network
According to an article in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, during March of last year, Professor Hans Herman-Hoppe was notified by UNLV officials that a student lodged an informal complaint over Hoppe's comments on time preference and homosexuals.
Hoppe said university officials intended to issue a letter of reprimand and dock a week's pay, but the option was rejected by his dean and by the university provost.
Hoppe protested that university officials declined to speak to other students in the class to find out what actually happened and even rejected letters he solicited from a half-dozen students.

 The Chronicle: Daily news: 02/14/2005 -- 06
Hoppe explains that the citizens of his idealized libertarian community must be prepared to ostracize dissidents: "Naturally no one is permitted to advocate ideas contrary to the very purpose of the covenant of preserving and protecting private property, such as democracy and communism.
Hoppe said that he was "tempted to reply to the provost's suggestion with a simple quip: Is the alleged categorical distinction between fact and opinion itself a fact or an opinion?" Mr.
Hoppe presented the concept of "time preferences"-- that is, people's varying degrees of willingness to defer the immediate consumption of goods in favor of saving and investment.

Anti-State.com : Hans-Hermann Hoppe’s Argumentation Ethic: A Critique , by Bob Murphy and Gene Callahan
Anarcho-capitalist theorist Hans-Hermann Hoppe justly enjoys a reputation for controversial positions and uncompromising scholarship.
Hoppe is engaging in a venerable philosophical exercise dating back at least to Plato: the attempt to remove contingency and uncertainty as factors in political discourse, in order to arrive at a method of achieving political conclusions that are demonstrably, logically correct, rather than merely persuasive.
At best, all Hoppe has proven is that it would be a performative contradiction for someone to deny in an argument that his debating opponent (and perhaps those in the same "class") own the body parts (such as eyes, brain, and lungs) necessary for debate, for the duration of the debate.

The special concern of this letter is the case of Hans-Hermann Hoppe, Professor of Economics at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and Senior Fellow of the Ludwig von Mises Institute.
That this could happen to Hoppe, a world-renowned economist, author, and speaker, as well as a pioneer in the libertarian tradition of political economy, is striking enough to make one worry about the status of colleagues with lower public profile and less academic protection.
In his lecture, Hoppe explained by way of illustration that certain demographic groups that might tend not to have children, such as homosexuals, generally do not adopt as long an economic time horizon as those that do have children.

Hoppe's essential argument is that when a monarchical king owned a territory, over which he possessed a governmental monopoly of tax and judgement, he passed it on to his heirs with some amount of farsightedness.
Hoppe fails utterly to address either the enormous corruption of the Russian and Southern aristocracies due to serfdom and black slavery, or the negative economic and social consequences of that corruption.
Hoppe and other utopian-anarchists miss one critical point: The choice between anarchy and tyranny is not a simple binary, they are ends of a scale that has nothing to do with the form of government.

Hoppe's characterization of it is more economic in thrust: The Austrian School of Economics, which Professor Hoppe is a member of, links such increase in present-centeredness as the main force which drives the real rate of interest up.
Hoppe's citations of Phillipe Rushton's work are clearly consistent with this: it says that the author is not really in the mood to entertain notions of self-censorship.
Hoppe confines himself to an economic analysis, so the political drawbacks of such a regime are not brought up.

Hoppe is precisely the person to illustrate the importance of freedom of speech etc. While we may think he is a ‘nutjob’, nonetheless he is entitled to his views, and his free speech.
What Hoppe did in that specific instance doesn’t merit firing - the quality of his work and his lack of commitment to scholarly values does.
The Hoppe case isn’t exactly the best example Rafe could have used to illustrate his thesis.

No Treason » Hoppe: Taking Out The Human Trash
Hoppe just said that his justification for immigration control to keep undesirables out is the same as the justification for forced expulsion of human trash.
I'm trying to read Hoppe as generously as I can on this, and, in context, he seems to be advocating only for not allowing advocates of homosexuality into a libertarian community that was founded by people who want to raise their children away from such influences.
Again, it is possible that Hoppe doesn't mean this, but that is the clear meaning of the passage, so he should issue a correction if this he believes his previous work was inaccurate.

As to Hoppe's absurdist comparison of democracy and monarchy, it's not a "thought experiment," but an actual historical claim, one that happens to have damn little to support it, other than a serious lack of understanding on his part of the economics on which he tries to draw in making his a priori claim.
Hoppe mentions that in a libertarian world, there would be all different kinds of communities/covenants, with differing degrees of discrimination and strictness.

Hans Hermann Hoppe's essay is pretty good, although alot of it can be found in his book "A Theory of Socialism and capitalism" from over a decade ago.
I hope that Hoppe, who wrote a good defense of non-mathematical economics in "Economic Science and the Austrian Method" included this essay as a joke to see what nonsensical conclusions you would get by using mathematical economics.
He concedes the fact that we would then be in more danger of accidents and nutballs, but he doesn't really take this fact into account in his analysis.

Hoppe then follows up with a demonstration of how reliance on the state for defence has left us in a state of perpetual war, with a continual and a permanently insecure destruction of private property, and how a system of insurance could provide us with a reliable system of both internal and external defence.
Hoppe's book is divided into four sections; State-making and war-making; Government forms, war, and strategy; Private alternatives to state defence and warfare; and Private security production and practical applications.
However, what was not pointed out was that Hoppe (and Rothbard) uses the term "monopoly" in its classical sense as being a coercive privilege, not in the sense of a single organisation controling the supply of a resource.
