Consequently, Hollein’s is a three-part design of sections which are pushed one into the other form outside in, and at the time modulated from inside out.
Hollein has created an unusual mixture of an untamed individual building and a liberated peripheral street block: a palais that by its own strength is bound for the creation of an ensemble and open for the architectural context that is yet to be.

Hans Hollein: Interbank Headquarters in Lima and the Generali Tower in Vienna, 2001 | Floornature
The architect Hans Hollein is responsible for two successful projects that have come into being in 2001: the Interbank Headquarters in Lima and the Generali tower in Vienna.
For Hollein's other project, the Generali Tower in Vienna, it must be immediately said that the location was decisive; building along the banks of the Danube Canal in Vienna, the nerve centre of the city, began in the 1950s when banks and insurance companies built offices there.
Hollein's two towers, while responding to differing needs and preserving their specific individuality, show this architect's unending fund of design solutions, confirming that he is capable of trying new building techniques which in any case prove to be lasting architectural models.

The Fall and Rise of Austrian Architecture
Hollein's work seems to issue from a spirit of redemption, rising from the ashes in a decidedly optimistic vision of the power of built forms to convey a sense of pregnant hope.
Hollein, unlike Prix and Swiczinsky, reserves his ties to the past for guidance and strength, understanding the recuperation of glory to be intrinsically tied to transformation of the past.
Hollein and Coop Himmelblau regularly abandon the traditional ways in which architecture's ability to bespeak its innate purpose is articulated, irrepressibly insisting against the readymade tendencies of much institutional architecture -- as well as against modernist architectural discourses such as the fading International Style and Postmodernism.

Hans Hollein won first prize and his plan was adopted, but many aspects of Kada's scheme were also admired, so while Hollein was given the museum, Kada was commissioned for the concert hall.
The main difference between the two is that while Hollein sought to focus the cultural development inwardly on a new pedestrian square (Schubert-Platz), Kada intended instead to make the new cultural buildings a link between the government area and the old town centre.
Hollein's introverted scheme would seem to be in danger of producing a political and cultural ghetto, but it will be hard to evaluate the success of the new square until all its buildings are complete.

By the 1960's, a critical distance with Vienna's past seemed possible, and a rigorous rethinking of the city's architectural direction seemed necessary, especially one that would shake the foundations of early 20th century modernism in order to understand which promises of those halcyon days had been fulfilled and which lay wasted.

Harvard University decided the best candidate to design a building on Mount Auburn Street in Harvard Square would be an avant-garde Viennese architect named Hans Hollein, winner of the much-ballyhooed Pritzker Prize (an award yet to be given to any architect working in a strongly traditional vein).
Hollein proposed a building with a wavy, sloping glass front and a metal mesh stretched across most of the facade.
Ronald Lee Fleming, president of the Townscape Institute, declared Hollein's design "a meshed thumb projecting into the eye of a street which has collected values over time." Eventually, the Cambridge Historical Commission ruled the design out of place and prevented it from being built.
