When Matisse allowed Sarah Stein and Hans Purrmann to form an academy in his name, which opened in January 1908, his career was entering a period of transition.
Through Purrmann and Levy he was introduced to Matisse, and was one of the original ten students in 1908, along with his wife Greta, who sat for the famous portrait by Matisse in the National Gallery, London.
Purrmann's mature style retained the strong influence of fauvism in its bold color and lyrical response to landscape.

Between 1908-1911 some 120 painters from around the world studied at the art school founded in his name by Matisse's admirers, the American patron, Sarah Stein, and the German painter, Hans Purrmann.
Also included are works by the Germans Rudolf Levy, Oskar Moll, and Purrmann, the Englishman Matthew Smith, and Matisse himself, who is represented by three drawings made in all likelihood at the Académie.
Students expecting instruction to match Matisse's reputation as the "wild man" of the avant-garde were surprised to have the Apollo Belvedere set before them to draw, and to be warned off indiscriminate use of pure color.

Matisse Book 10   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
A young artist from Munich, Hans Purrmann, like the Steins, became a Matisse enthusiast with the 1905 Salon, and he did most to gain Matisse an early acceptance in Germany.
But in terms of quantity, his most important collectors before 1914 were two rich Russians, first and foremost Sergei Shchukin, and then Ivan Morosov, both of whom bought his works and those of Picasso and other great moderns by the dozens.
And great service was done to contemporary American art by Hans Hofmann, the German-born painter and teacher, in that he kept Matisse's influence and example to the front among the younger artists in New York during the late 1930s and early 1940s, when the tide of opinion was going the other way.
