The Hansard Society's eDemocracy Programme is a research and development unit seeking innovative ways of using new interactive technologies to connect Parliament and citizens, and encourage participation in the democratic process.
In evidence to the House of Commons Procedure Committee Inquiry into Public Petitions, the Hansard Society identified positive aspects of e-petitioning and recommended that any system adopted should be piloted and monitored to evaluate its effectiveness as well as its compatibility with other parliamentary mechanisms and procedures.
Chief Executive, Fiona Booth, commented: ‘This is excellent news for the Hansard Society as we have been piloting innovative ways of using new interactive technologies to connect Parliament and citizens for the last decade.

The Hansard Society will again be organising fringe events at all three party conferences and this year we will be looking at the role of communication in a modern democracy.

At yesterday evening’s event at the LSE, Sir John Major spoke to Elinor Goodman from the Hansard Society Council on a wide range of issues covering Europe, the Iraq war, ‘sofa’ government, party leadership and when resignation is the right thing to do.
The fourth Audit of Political Engagement undertaken jointly by the Hansard Society and the Electoral Commission was launched at a meeting in the House of Commons on Tuesday March 27.
On Tuesday February 6, The Hansard Society published a timely Briefing paper on Lords Reform containing exclusive research by YouGov on the public’s attitides.

Tuesday saw the launch of 'Spinning the Web', the Hansard Society analysis of online campaigning in the 2005 general election, edited by Professor Stephen Coleman and Dr Stephen Ward.
The launch was at Portcullis House, with Stephen Coleman, Steve Ward, Lynne Featherstone and yours truly speaking, followed by some questions from the audience.
Anyway, you can buy the report from the Hansard Society - they don't seem to have it available to download, free or otherwise - and you can read my modest contribution on andfinally, with comments on the BillBlog once the thing is working again - server seems to be down this morning :-(

 Heehaw to Produce CD-ROM for Hansard Society | Heehaw Multimedia
Heehaw Multimedia have been appointed to produce a "MPs in Schools" CD-ROM pack for Hansard Society Scotland.
The CD-ROM, and associated printed materials, will be distributed to schools in Scotland to aid in preparation for visits by Westminster MPs.
This project follows from the successful development of a similar pack which was designed to aid visits by MSPs in Scotland.

TheyWorkForYou were rightly rewarded for their contribution to civic society.
This comes after the Hansard Society suggested recently that politicians’ blogs should be used more to ask questions than provide answers.
In reality it is just too soon to say for sure how human society will adapt to the existence of the internet and predicting during such a period of flux, as if all the trends that have been established now will continue linearly, would be misguided.
