The Air Force Base has a minimal environmental impact and is not part of the threat to the historic or natural resources of the area.
In 1997 the Air Force Base ceased the deployment of an active wing of the Air Force at the airfield, and control of the airport reverted to the State which gave it to Massport to operate "For the good of the people of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts".
Hanscom Air Force base participated in the negotiations with Massport for a Memorandum of Understanding regarding future plans for the airport, as originated by former Massport director Peter Blute.

By contrast, Hanscom may be more vulnerable because it does not fit the Air Force's traditional bias in favor of bases that have fighter wings, they said.
If there is negative news for Hanscom, Owsley said, it could be that the Pentagon will try to realign the Bedford base along with other so-called military laboratories, such as similar research facilities run by the Air Force in Los Angeles; the Army in Monmouth, N.J.; and the Navy in San Diego.
Still, he and Dixon said the Hanscom base has an excellent chance of staying open because of its research capabilities and the Legislature's approval earlier this year of $261 million in bond funding for expanding the base and the Soldier Systems Center.
