As Fosnes Hansen brings them alive through the poignant and often harrowing tales of their youth, including the death of their dreams and the sorrows which have led them to the Titanic, we see them as ordinary people whose lives might have been completely different if just one or two circumstances had changed.
A writer of great intensity, Fosnes Hansen's portrayals of his characters are simultaneously gripping and sympathetic, his stories and anecdotes realistic and moving.
Hansen's book does not conform to the majority of fictional writing on the Titanic - bombastic romance and thrill-seekers will be disappointed with the more cerebral tone of his novel - but that makes it all the better.

Norwegian novelist Erik Fosnes Hansen has seized upon that story as the hinge for this fascinating, if at times distressing, book about the musicians aboard the fatal voyage.
Hansen's characters are the band musicians, celebrated in Titanic lore, who continued playing as the ship went down.
Their stories are ablaze with the drama of love gone awry and talents not fully realized, but Hansen also uses them to speculate on the larger themes of responsibility and fate, reason and faith.

A young man writes a virtuoso novel, and the reader, hearing this news, imagines what it might be: a blare of grand attitudes and romantic bosh perhaps, or a bravura display of cynicism not quite fully baked or fully earned.
But the mood of Erik Fosnes Hansen's remarkable Psalm at Journey's End (Farrar, Straus and Giroux; 371 pages; $24), published in its original Norwegian six years ago, when the author was 25, is dreamlike, elegiac stillness, a condition not usually thought of as youthful.

Psalm at Journey's End, on a superficial level, is the tale of the Titanic on its tragic voyage, told through the eyes of its band that, as myth has it, went on playing right to the end amidst panic and chaos.
