Hanussen Film Review - Time Out Film
On tours of Vienna and Berlin under the stage name of Hanussen, Schneider's phenomenal predictions bring him into contact with the decadent post-war elite; and despite his apolitical stance, his prophecies of Hitler's rise to power inevitably implicate him with the Nazis, threatening his friendships and precarious sense of stability...
Brandauer's dominating screen presence is perfectly suited to the role of the charismatic seducer, whose abilities to transfer his will and to control respondents serve as a not so subtle metaphor for the rise of Fascism.
In hospital he forms friendships with two people who will help him to shape his future: Jewish psychologist Bettelheim (Josephson) and Nowotny (Eperjes), an ambitious army acquaintance who decides to promote Schneider's talents.

 Erik Jan Hanussen, Hellseher

Hitler's relationship with Hanussen (1889-1933), a Jewish clairvoyant, was initiated when Hanussen predicted that Hitler would rise to power in Germany.

The psychic is the subject of a Werner Herzog film starring Tim Roth, scheduled to be released in 2001.

 Wellington Film Society - HANUSSEN
A comrade in arms from the battlefield proceeds to package Hanussen like some valuable racehorse, a property that earns both money and influence in high places.
Istvan Szabo's third "Brandauer" film which in period and mood forms a trilogy with Mephisto and Colonel Redl, contains some scintillating passages.
Brandauer flicks into effortless overdrive in the public scenes, mesmerising us, the audience, as much as those on screen as he persuades a deranged soldier to give up a primed grenade, or from behind his blindfold identifies a revolver in a lady's handbag...

Hanussen - Rent This DVD with Quickflix
Hanussen is another real-life character, a visionary and mind-reader who lived in Berlin between the wars and who was employed by the Nazis until they had no further use for him.
The film follows on from Mephisto and Colonel Redl, and, as in those superb dramas, the central character is played by Klaus Maria Brandauer.
At his first performance in a provincial town, he surprises even himself when he correctly predicts the sinking of a ship on its way to America.

Relive it all tonight at Bimbo's when the Goethe-Institut presents 'HANUSSEN: THE TRUE STORY OF HITLER'S JEWISH CLAIRVOYANT,' a "Weimar cabaret extravaganza." Staged like a '20s Berlin club revue, it uses comic sketches, music, film, dance, mysticism, and magic acts to chronicle Hanussen's rise from a carny hypnotist to Nazi Germany's premier clairvoyant.
The show stars Wagnerian songstress Nina Hagen, the original Hanussen's orphaned son (also named Hanussen and also a clairvoyant), a host of local actors, and musical accompaniment by the Club Foot Orchestra.
LIFE IS A CABARET The legacy of Germany's Weimar Republic has certainly lasted longer than did the ill-fated government itself -- and no wonder, considering the deluge of avant-garde artistry that graced the brief period between the kaiser and Hitler.
