Hanyang University, a large private institution based in Seoul, South Korea, has announced a pledge of $500,000 to the University of Oregon for scholarships, student and faculty exchanges, joint symposia, renovation of the International Center in the Erb Memorial Union (EMU), and converting a classroom into a state-of-the-art language teaching lab.

About 100 students enroll in each six-month cycle of the program that is taught on the Hanyang campus.  Most participants are Korean nationals but some foreign students also have enrolled in the program.
Both Gildea and Tomlin have traveled to South Korea to be faculty members for the program.  Currently, Tomlin serves as the program’s director and will present the initial lectures when the next cycle starts in January.
As a result of the success realized from this first joint program, the University of Oregon and Hanyang University will continue to explore ways to expand and deepen their academic collaboration to benefit students at both institutions.  Currently, the two are considering possible collaborative efforts in social science, business and creative arts.
