Haplology and vowel underspecification - Faculty of Arts at The University of Auckland, New Zealand
In this paper I argue from phonological evidence that haplology is not deletion, but is instead the simultaneous pronunciation of two non-distinct phonological representations.
Haplology also occurs in cases where the elements involved are not segmentally identical.
In conclusion, to the extent that haplology is the only available analysis of the to yuu-na N construction which permits it to be derived as syntactically well-formed, it can be said that neither i nor u is unmarked.

Haplology and suppletion, however, involve accidental repetition: the relevant morphemes happen to have the same form and happen to surface next to each other.
The ungrammaticality of (22a) and (22c) demonstrates that haplology cannot be involved in the explanation of the grammatical examples.
We suggest that the key to understanding the distribution of expletive er lies in an interpretive rule which states that an occurrence of er is assigned the expletive function if it occurs in the IP or CP domain (we remain neutral on what this function exactly entails).

Verbal clitics: their domain of distribution is the verb complex, they form a cluster, and are clause-bound (no climbing and no haplology).
Sentential clitics: their domain of distribution is the clause, they are not clause-bound and show climbing and haplology effects.
Their domain of distribution is the clause of their predicate, but they do not participate in clitic cluster formation and are clause bound (hence, no climbing, no haplology).

It is demonstrated that the interaction of other constraints with this ranking accounts for the different types of haplology attested in natural language, including total and partial-identity haplology, coextensive haplology, stem-edge and non-local haplology, and reduplicative haplology.
The issue of what triggers haplology has also been given a great deal of attention.
Recent works have advocated the use of a generalised OCP that bans adjacent identical strings.

Omission of one of a pair of sounds or syllables.
A nice irony is that haplology is just the sort of word to which haplology happens...
It’s a special case of what’s called syncopation, a grammatical term for losing any kind of sound in the middle of a word, such as the poetic shortening of even to e’en, or the way pacifist has been created from the longer pacificist that was its original spelling.

In some words such as tautology and haplology, the -logy suffix is from the Greek λογος, word, and denotes not a field of study but a type of speech or writing.
For example, haplology means the mistake of saying one letter, syllable or word when two or more are required, as in the example of pronouncing the word February somewhat like "Febuary".
It should also be pointed out that some words mean to study something, but aren't called ologies – midwifery is one example.

Just something in my eye.Today's Good Word is a reduction of the verb nictitate by a process known as 'haplology'.
Haplology is the collapse of two similar or identical syllables into one, for example, probably is usually reduced to probly when pronounced because of the two instances of the sound [ahb] in its middle.
Nictitate has a [tê] and a [tey] which, apparently, are similar enough for haplology.

It is, on the surface, ungrammatical, but in Lawrence (1998) I present an analysis which allows it to be interpreted as conforming to the generally accepted rules of Japanese grammar.
The analysis crucially depends on haplology and radical underspecification of vowel features.
I am currently investigating further evidence which supports this analysis in terms of haplology.
