Twelve families of earthworms occur in North America north of Mexico - Acanthodrilidae, Criodrilidae, Lutodrilidae, Glossoscolecidae, Komarekionidae, Lumbricidae, Eudrilidae, Megascolecidae, Octochaetidae, Ocnerodrilidae, Sparganophilidae, and Haplotaxidae (most often considered an aquatic microdrile family, with one genus and one nominal species in North America); we recognize 40 genera and 159 nominal species in these families.
Of these, 47 nominal species representing 22 genera in 8 families occur in Illinois.
gordioides (Haplotaxidae), a species that has not yet been collected in its sexually mature state in North America, is most commonly associated with groundwater habitats (springs, cave streams, wells, cisterns).

Timm (1981) indicates that groups such as Haplotaxidae Michaelsen, 1900 and Tubificinae Eisen, 1879, in which the chaetal bundles should be vestiges of parapodia, represent the basal forms of Clitellata.
In Questidae and Haplotaxidae (considered to be one of the most basal group of Clitellata; Brinkhurst 1984a) the synapomorphy consists of the presence of two pairs of ovaries in the female reproductive system (Brinkhurst 1982, 1992b) (Tab.
The presence of a spermatheca and the opening of the gonoduct in segment 14 found in Questidae and Clitellata (Brinkhurst and Jamieson 1971; Giere and Riser 1981) must be synapomorphic for these taxa.

 Omodeo on megadriles
The required modifications went on in divergent ways in the three superfamilies Lumbricoidea, Megascolecoidea, and Eudriloidea.
The most primitive among the Lumbricoidea, which stemmed from some strain akin to the Haplotaxidae, are limicolous and are distributed over a broad territory corresponding to the northern and central regions of the Lower Triassic Pangaea.
Based on ovarian structure, these megadriles may be divided into a northern strain, that originated in Laurasia, and a southern strain, that originated in Gondwana.

The 50 oligochaete taxa representing all familes of "opisthoporous"oligochaetes (Alluroididae, earthworms and aquatic "megadriles") together with two representatives of the Haplotaxidae and three examples of"microdiles" were subjected to cladistic analysis using the PAUP program.
Sixty-eight characters used in the analyses were derived from acomprehensive range of somatic and genital systems.
