  Happy Hate Me Nots 1
Most NFH interviews were conducted by me writing up a list of questions and sending it along with a blank cassette to be answered and returned by the recipient in their own good time.
I’d seen the Happy Hate Me Nots play in Sydney and had listened to their "You’re An Angel" and "Salt, Sour and Brighton" singles and their Scrap mini-lp many times over, but I was in complete ignorance of the tour-de-force Out lp that was due to arrive within the next few weeks.
The Happy Hate Me Nots are as powerful and fast as any punk band, yet they maintain a pop sensibility that will leave you humming their songs day in and day out.

Divine Rites : Noise for Heros - Happy Hate Me Nots
The Happy Hate Me Nots play a special brand of power pop that goes much deeper than the sort of fun-time music that comes to mind when the term is used.
Their sound was less sophisticated than the Happy Hate Me Nots, and the production is rougher and liver, but the music evokes the same feeling.
This song is called "Everyday", and to go with its dynamic tune it's got the sort of lyric that makes Happy Hate Me Nots songs grab: "I had to show some courage/I had to show conviction/I've wasted all my time/Everyday a little more/Everday a valve gets rusted up".

Playing power pop with muscle, this Sydney quartet — sort of a punkier, street-level Hoodoo Gurus — fills Scrap with six spunky songs about love and introspection that are both fresh-sounding and high on buoyant energy.
Producer Rob Younger (ex-Radio Birdman) captures the live-and-loud sound with all of the quartet's nuance intact, making Out a robust demonstration of the Hate Me Nots' amazing ability to give songs a wallop without knocking the pop stuffing out of them.

Just as wonderful is "Once in a While", where my earlier comparisons to Dolly Varden and The Jayhawks are wholly merited by this terrific composition, which uses dynamics effectively, offsetting a downcast, heartbreaking verse with some uplifting melodies and playing.
While not exactly a punk band, the Happy Hate Me Nots played an anthemic powerful type of rock, exploding with passion.

It’s after a few dives that you also become aware that you’re helplessly infected by the melodies that are “gonna bite, chew and rip your soul in two”.
Considering the level of energy coming out of this shiny little piece of plastic, they kinda remind me of their Nashville soulmates The Shazam and thanks to the powerful, new wavish innocence, they could also be found walking through the “supergrass”, playing early Costello tunes.
