 Wong Kar-wai : Happy Together
A movie released in the year of the Handover, Happy Together unfolds on the other side of the globe from Hong Kong and is informed by such gravity.

It was a relief to have Happy Together land in the Ottawa region, particularly after being denied the inestimable treat that is Fallen Angels (Wong Kar-Wai's fourth film that never made it here).
The film has no doubt benefitted from the 'Best Direction' accolade it earned at Cannes last year.
Although the events and situations in Wong's films are never banal or uninteresting the real strength of the filmmaker is his abiltiy to appropriately employ every facet of the medium.

The San Francisco Women's Film Festival, now in its second year, features works directed or co-directed by women....

As "A Scanner Darkly" finally makes its way to the big screen, the Dick estate is happy, Pallotta is happy that they're happy, and PKD himself would hopefully be happy as well.

 Bright Lights Film Journal 2046
(Of course, “2046” has other resonances outside of this film: it was the number of Chow’s hotel room in In the Mood for Love; and it is the last year of the fifty-year period that China has guaranteed to leave Hong Kong unchanged.)
Here, Chow’s character is at its most appealing in this film, as he misses out on his own chances for Christmas Eve “warmth” by taking up the opportunity to make Jingwen happy (encouraging her to phone her boyfriend in Japan) and getting his own happiness from that.
Characteristically for Wong, the film’s major theme is spelt out quite explicitly late in the film in one of Chow’s voice-overs: “Love is all a matter of timing,” he says.

Elijah Wood - Forever Young - Review
Forever Young is the kind of movie my mother likes—sweet, good old fashioned story, cute kid, no one gets really injured, depression is rewarded with joy and a happy ending.
What makes Forever Young endearing (and enduring as a classic) is Daniel’s search for an answer from a man who is dead for many years; and of course, his still undying love for Helen (Isabel Glasser) even with the presence of Claire Cooper (Jamie Lee Curtis) to add sexual tension.
Not necessary to the plot, but central to Forever Young’s success is the then eleven year old Elijah Wood, who for one of the very few times in his seventeen year acting career, needs to play a kid.
