 Salon | "Happy Together"
"Happy Together" is more closely related to the morose and mannered style of other Wong pictures like "As Tears Go By." It may be that the joie de vivre of "Chungking Express" was a fluke.
That picture was shot in a few weeks during a break in the filming of Wong's avant-martial-arts epic "Ashes of Time," and perhaps that tight shooting schedule gave him a chance to be looser, off-the-cuff.
Unfortunately, "Happy Together" has been given a dark-hued tone that's heavy-spirited, almost morbid, instead of voluptuous.

Now, "Happy Together" is not about a man and his father, it is about a gay couple trying to reconcile and "start all over again" in Buenos Aires.
There are a lot of critics out there who claim "Happy Together" is about the Hong Kong 1997 issue, which is really another way of saying, "I am an intellectual and I see things that are not there." Fuck that kind of bullshit.
"Happy Together" is not, as the title seems to suggest, about two men who are happy with each other.

Happy Together is one film that inspires such thoughts.
Wong is one of the most prolific and well known of the Hong Kong auteurs (his résumé includes Chungking Express and Days of Being Wild), and Happy Together is a strong testament to his technical skills as a filmmaker.
Happy Together is at its heart an experimental film--there are no subplots, no backstories, merely what we see on the screen, and that is all viewers are given to make sense of the film.

Happy Together is an exercise in emotional estrangement—from one’s lover, one’s homeland, and oneself.
Somehow they find themselves back together, and the slow burn of their disintegrating love provides more exploration into the lives of lost, lonely souls that is Wong Kar-Wai’s never-ending obsession.
Happy Together is simply a journey, and an affecting one.

In Happy Together, the visuals made the film come alive, and made concrete the dislocation that the main characters felt from their surroundings and each other.
Lan Yu is also much more talky than Happy Together, so instead of visual poetry, we get lame-brained dialogue, such as the scene in which one sullen character explains his failed attempt to try to photograph a rainbow.
In Happy Together, the characters seem to have full knowledge that their relationship is ultimately doomed, but they continue onward nonetheless, giving the film a quixotic feel that it can’t shake as its lovers tango back and forth during their Argentinean escapade.

Happy Together Movie Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
"Happy Together" is a straightforward narrative with the existential philosophy and the stylish-camera work toned-down, which made it an average Wong Kar-Wai film.
The exhilaration of watching his films comes from fitting together the pieces of a 90-minute intellectual puzzle, and subsequent viewings generally revealed new interpretations and nuances.
Though the film had a few moments of brilliance, the combination of leisurely pacing without the trademark eye- and brain-candy made it difficult to sit through-- there was just not enough mystery and mysticism to make it one of his better films.

"Happy Together", "She'd Rather Be With Me", and several other songs recorded by the Turtles were written by Gary Bonner and Alan Gordon, both formerly in a band called the Magicians.
"Happy Together" was released in February, 1967, so I don't imagine it was high on the charts anymore in 1970.

In writing on Happy Together we must first speak of two films: the 97-minute version, released theatrically in 1997, and a second one, roughly three hours long and never publicly screened.
Even the decision to shoot the film in both fl and white and color reinforces this sense of indeterminacy: the fl and white images are never purely fl and white but are always haunted by color, while the color itself is often partial or washed out.
