As many who have watched this film would point out, the relationship cools during the course of the movie, so the hottest action you do see is at the very beginning where the two engage in somewhat rough hanky panky.
Being a Hong Kong film in 1997, the idea of it being linked to the handover is almost unavoidable, making it a film about ties that can never be severed, though two grow apart.
All in all, it gives the impression of an art film, and like an art film, it touches the viewer on a level that can't quite be grasped.

There is a snide cheekiness in the title of Don Roos’ indie drama Happy Endings that goes some way in alluding to the quizzical effrontery of this, his third film as a writer/director force after The Opposite of Sex (1998) and Bounce (2000).
Happy Endings, about a bunch of entangled non-nuclear families interwoven by vague and coincidental associations, is a frustratingly oblique film that is also deeply familiar with the contrivances of popular indie plots and structures.
It’s the pipelines that connect the film’s audience to its characters that doesn’t make much chop: over the course of a number of fragmented episodes we are introduced to a range of complicated personalities but learn little of what makes them tick, and thus we feel little empathy for their messy predicaments.

Interesting fact: The film was originally three hours long, and was edited to it's current running time (an hour and a half) a day or so before it was to premiere ar Cannes.

"Happy Together" is a straightforward narrative with the existential philosophy and the stylish-camera work toned-down, which made it an average Wong Kar-Wai film.
The exhilaration of watching his films comes from fitting together the pieces of a 90-minute intellectual puzzle, and subsequent viewings generally revealed new interpretations and nuances.
Though the film had a few moments of brilliance, the combination of leisurely pacing without the trademark eye- and brain-candy made it difficult to sit through-- there was just not enough mystery and mysticism to make it one of his better films.

Visually this is probably his most experimental film and yet, (again) this is done with no discomfort to the viewer.

What largely disappoints is that, for the most part, only Chico and Harpo are seen; Groucho only appears in an occasional monologue, and doesn’t even appear with his brothers until the very end of the movie.
Love Happy is remembered largely because it marks the first screen appearance of Marilyn Monroe, but even here, you’re bound to be disappointed.
If we actually had the three of them together for more than just one scene, things would be completely different.

With no flashback to point to a happier time or a hint of a positive indication as to why they are together, Wong comes up short in inflaming any sparks that could still be struck between lovers who argue constantly.

Wong and his tremendously talented cinematographer Chris Doyle were rebelling against the trademark style the film ends with, a gorgeous, idiosyncratic grammar of slow-motion and canted angles and blur and streaks of neon.
While "Happy Together" isn't the easiest movie to watch, its images and mood stay with you, lingering like the stink of smoke in a sweater or the face you put to the last heartbreak.

That's just what is at the crux of Happy Together: a productive tension, a pressure on its content by its structure, that hints at an expansion of possibility without any of the old limits.
Perhaps this is what really is at the heart of the "happy together" that the film's ecstatic conclusion celebrates: a synthesis, full of possibility, of two cultural spaces, or two cinematic spaces, or two ways of life.
