Donald Keene Center of Japanese Culture - Harakiri Film notes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Every appeal Harakiri makes to the senses has been carefully calculated to plant seeds in the mind that continue to germinate and grow long after we have left the theater.
The story of Harakiri unfolds at a time when the content and spirit of the code were still being worked out, leaving ample room for conflicting interpretations.
Harakiri is an inspiring example of the aesthetic and intellectual satisfactions made possible by a thoroughly conscious interrogation of history, tradition, and form.

In Harakiri, known as Seppuku, in Japan, the audience learns about the socioeconomic and political changes that a ronin faced after the loss of a position while suffering from poverty and hunger.
Harakiri offers much more than mere sword fight, as Kobayashi allows the audience to reflect over the social application of the Bushido and the abuse of the samurai code.
Unlike Kurosawa's rousing samurai epics, this is an uncompromisingly tragic tale, exposing the hypocrisy of 17th-century Japanese society with its story of a family destroyed by the cruelty of feudalism toward warriors in peacetime.

The DVD Journal | Quick Reviews: Harakiri: The Criterion Collection
Judging from its title, its key art, or even a sketch of its narrative, 1962's Harakiri would seem to be of a piece with the other samurai films from the 1960s that audiences have revered for decades: stylish, kinetic, and entertaining.
Harakiri begins with the arrival of Hanshiro Tsugumo (Tatsuya Nakadai) at the gates of the Iyi clan's compound.
In Harakiri he alternates between static moments of tense silence and judiciously chosen camera moves — gliding tracking shots, slow zooms, and the occasional quick pan — which serve to heighten emotion at key moments in the film.

After an unemployed warrior is forced by a feudal lord to commit harakiri, his father in-law returns the scene, seemingly to play out the same agonizing suicide ritual.

However, in an era of peace with few employment prospects for samurai in the dwindling local feudal clans that were allowed to remain after the centralization of power by the Tokugawa shogunate, the request has become commonplace.
Based on a novel by Yasuhiko Takiguchi, Harakiri is a scathing indictment on the hypocrisy, repression, and barbarism of codified behavior.
By illustrating the class stratification and imposed social conformity fostered by the Tokugawa shogunate (1600-1867) as a means of retaining and centralizing authority, Kobayashi presents a harrowing indictment of the ingrained cultural legacy of coercive, outmoded rituals, chauvinism, and blind obedience that resulted in the inhumanity and senseless tragedy of the Pacific War.

Ultimately, Chijiiwa is forced to commit harakiri in order to prove his honor, and in the film's most shocking scene, disembowels himself with his bamboo blade.
"Harakiri" may not be as famous as Kurosawa and Mifune's samurai pictures, but it's a great one nonetheless, well worth the time spent seeking it out (I'd love to see this reissued on DVD).

 Seppuku - Ritual Suicide
The custom was so deeply entrenched, however, that it continued, and in 1663, at the urging of Lord Nobutsuna Matsudaira of Izu, the shogunate government issued another, stronger edict, prohibiting ritual suicide.
This was followed up by very stern punishment for any lord who allowed any of his followers to commit harakiri or seppuku.
Still the practice continued throughout the long Tokugawa reign, but it declined considerably as time went by.

Nor was Lord Asano “beheaded” for this breach of etiquette—in the sense that we in the West understand the term—since it is unthinkable that such a punishment would be imposed on someone of Asano’s rank.
Rather Lord Asano was sentenced to commit seppuku (harakiri), ritual suicide, one of the five grades of punishment for wrongdoers among the samurai class.
All aspects of the seppuku ritual were prescribed with precision: apparel, site, time, witnesses, inspector, and assistant.
