HARALD ZWART: That was the intention of all that.
HARALD ZWART: I put that scene in there so that you, as a viewer, are reminded that you are listening to somebody's memory, not the truth.
HARALD ZWART: Exactly, it's a tough call and I don't know if I made the right call, hearing you speak, I wish I'd left that in, because Matt Dillon did some great stuff in that doorway scene, he was really obnoxious.

Zwart himself did contribute some of the comic sequences in the film, such as a sequence where Jewel is washing her car in a provocative way and Detective Dehling becomes infatuated with her.
The most valuable insight, Zwart said, "is that you should trust your first instinct." Used to making quick decisions in commercials where there is a fast turn-around, whereas living with the material from "McCool's," Zwart noted, presented him with a big challenge and he found himself often second-guessing himself.
Zwart is keen to pursue a successful career in commercials with his wife, who heads their joint new company, Motion Blur in Santa Monica.

Director Harald Zwart's feature debut is the type of picture where the "daring" has been carefully calculated -- the hottie heroine saying that "fucking" is her favorite thing, or donning bondage gear, or slipping her head below the frame in order to minister a consoling blow job.
There's never a moment where Zwart or screenwriter Stan Seidel seems to have surrendered to his unconscious, where you feel the thrill of a joke being pushed too far into smutty chaos.
And Zwart is so intent on working up a horny head of steam that the set pieces he stages -- Jewel nearly humping the hood of the car she's washing while water and suds stream down her -- are neither funny nor sexy.

Zwart himself indirectly confirmed this during last weekend's Amanda show from Haugesynd, where "Velvet" was among the songs used as background music for the trailer Harald Zwart had created for his upcoming Hollywood-debut, "One Night at McCool's".
In addition, Atlantic is very enthusiastic and eager to work with a-ha," says Lane, who points to A1's new first place in England with a cover of a-ha's "Take On Me" as proof of a-ha's classic songwriting abilities.

Flipside Movie Emporium: One Night at McCool's Movie Review
Directed by Norwegian prankster Harald Zwart, the confounding tone dances between quaint cutesiness and numbing hardcore violence, to which the unsuspecting viewer's head might spin into confusion.
These visions all share one factor: Jewel is a sex kitten, and they all want to screw her more than anything else in the world.
What's most impressive about Zwart's interpretation is the gauche color scheme, painting in what he has described as "all the colors of the rainbow." For all the sex and violence, of which there is plenty, McCool's has a specific color palette reminiscent of a children's book (if a children's book were set in Vegas).

SPLICEDwire | "One Night at McCool's" review (2001)
Why he comes to this slimeball -- played with crude, reptilian aplomb by Michael Douglas in a powder blue polyester paisley shirt and a really bad toupee -- only becomes clear with the ominous exchange of $10,000 for criminal services to be rendered.
But while "McCool's" is as ripe as can be for wicked laughs, first-time director Harald Zwart seems a little too green to fully harvest the humor.
As I look back on my notes, I wrote more about Zwart visual trickery (the guys all see Tyler in a artificially colorized, soft-focus haze) than I did about the movie's many zany episodes.

dOc DVD Review: One Night at McCool's (2001) - Printable
This is a first-time production for the Norwegian commercial/music video director Harald Zwart, and it's obvious that he hasn't abandoned the hit-em-hard/fast sell approach that is necessary to convey ideas in thirty seconds to three minutes.
For example, at one point Dehling comes out of Randy's house and finds Jewel washing the car—and immediately a hip-hop song comes onto the soundtrack, and the screen is filled with jump cuts and close-ups of Jewel in various overtly sexual positions.
Hitchcock couldn't complain because he's dead, but apparently Zwart is one of those directors allowing his films to be changed for home video release.

 ToxicUniverse.com - Harald Zwart - 2001 - One Night At McCool's Movies Review
That's where my devotion to informing my readers and exposing all that is evil comes in—two years after this travesty of celluloid hit theaters, I rented and re-watched (though never again) the entire movie to offer it fair review.
Directed by Norwegian Harald Zwart, and the first production from Michael Douglas' company Further Films, the inexplicably complex plot follows a hit-man, an attorney, a petty thug, and a slacker as they walk into a bar and lose all cognitive functions as soon as they see Jewel.
Director Zwart releases his follow-up, Agent Cody Banks next week, again employing talent, in what promises to be further consumer exploitative debauchery.
