County, the state's 113th county, is located in west central Georgia, on the border with Alabama, and covers 282 square miles.
at first Haralson County's economy revolved around gold mining, after the mines were depleted inhabitants made their living by farming, chiefly cotton, and harvesting the stands of lumber prevalent in the area.
According to the 2000 U.S. census, the population of Haralson County is 25,690 (93 percent white, 5.4 percent fl, and 0.6 percent Hispanic), a 17 percent increase since 1990.

The old county courthouse, built in 1891 and now home of the local historical society, is a prime example of a public building constructed in the Queen Anne style.

Murphy, who has held the office of a state Speaker of the House longer than anyone else in the U.S.; Whitlow Wyatt, a former Braves pitcher; and Leroy Almon, a well respected southern folk artist who has had work exhibited by the Smithsonian.

In 1891, the county began construction of a large red brick courthouse with clock tower that was completed the following year (see photo).
The legislation creating Haralson County authorized the justices of the county's new inferior court to designate the site of the county seat, to purchase the land, to lay out and sell town lots, and to arrange for construction of a courthouse and other public buildings.
Until a county seat was selected, the law provided that Haralson County elections and public business take place in Tallapoosa (which then was in Carroll County).
