Topic: Harbingers (comics)

In the News (Tue 22 Dec 09)

  Comic-Book Superstore: Art and Comics
Comic books, perhaps the central staple of U.S. youth culture, have been fundamental in both shaping and reflecting the country's political, social, ethical and even sexual mores ever since Superman made his first appearance on the cover of Action Comics in 1938.
By the late 1940s, comics were at the center of a full-fledged cultural war; claims that they corrupted youth and caused crime and juvenile delinquency, resulted in congressional hearings and laws that banned the books.
After the war, crime and horror comic books came to be apprehensively regarded by some as "harbingers of a degenerate and disturbingly confrontational youth culture," and there was widespread censorship of the medium.

VALIANT (all caps, all the time) Comics is the independent comic book publisher started in the early 1990s by a group of ex-Marvel Comics employees who were sick of the way Marvel and the comic industry in general were producing comics, and VALIANT was determined to do them better.
Just as Marvel reinvented the way comics were told, creating new types of characters and plots that the reader could relate to (no super-powered aliens from another world or millionaire playboy vigilantes of the night), VALIANT was now changing all the rules and setting new standards of quality and storytelling.

The Harbingers want to protect the Earth and its continued existence by causing global catastophy and pearing down the human race to the strongest and most intelligent that then can be taught, while the Seals want to preserve the human race and guide it towards a better future through subtlety and behind the scenes workings.
He opposes one of the Harbingers, each Seal has their counterpart Harbinger like Fuma and Kamui, who is also a holdover from Babylon.
The interplay between these two is great, but it is only a facet, and the actions of the rest of the cast hold little interest for me. Kamui is too cold, Fuma is too bull headed, Kotori is vapid, and the reasons for the two sides fighting seem a bit too clear cut.

Valiant Comics is the comic book publishing company founded by former Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Jim Shooter and renowned writer/artists Bob Layton and Barry Windsor-Smith in 1989.
From the beginning, all Valiant Comics titles could be divided into two groups - titles that were set in the 20th century (the present) and titles that were set in the 41st century (beginning with 4000 A.D.) The heroes from the present weren't aware of the heroes of the future until the Unity conflict.
While towards the end, Valiant Comic writers began to move away from real-world science and "realistic" superheroes, Acclaim Universe writers tended to ignore it altogether, sticking to the customary "wisdom" of the average comic world.

Atlas Comics had survived the superhero depression by turning to horror, suspense and science fiction stories, such as the ones pictured below, produced by Atlas editor Stan Lee, with a handful of stories being drawn by artist Jack Kirby.
It was during this phase of his career that Lee and his artists gradually developed what came to be known as the "Marvel method" of creating a comic book.
The method used by DC -- and every other comic company -- was straightforward: The writer wrote a full script, complete with captions and dialogue, then gave it to the penciler, who drew it.
