Shakespeare and the Players | The Players | E. Harcourt Williams
Ernest George Harcourt Williams began his career, like so many other Shakespearean actors, with Frank Benson and first appeared in London in 1900 with Benson's company.
He married another player, Jean Sterling Mackinlay in 1908, and although his professional life was interrupted by World War I, he was associated with a number of fine actors and successful managers, among them George Alexander, H. Irving, Ellen Terry, and, of course, Frank Benson.
Williams also played in a number of films, all told twenty between 1944 and 1956.

Frustrated by her lack of connection to the real world, she slips away from her protective handlers and goes on a spree, aided by a tough-guy news reporter (Gregory Peck).
Director William Wyler, more at home with such heavy-going, Oscar-winning classics as The Best Years of Our Lives and Ben- Hur, doesn't always keep the champagne bubbles afloat, and the Peck role would have fit Cary Grant like a silk glove.
William Wyler was a shrewd director author of many outstanding movies as: "Wuthering Heights" (1939), "The Best Years of Our Lives" (1946) or "Ben-Hur" (1959) amongst others.

 Amazon.co.uk: Roman Holiday [1953]: Video: Gregory Peck,Audrey Hepburn,Eddie Albert,Hartley Power,Harcourt ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Add to this stellar triumvirate the meticulous, loving direction of William Wyler and a warm-hearted original story by Dalton Trumbo (fllisted and uncredited at the time) and the result is assuredly one of Hollywood's timeless classics.
At the leading man's own suggestion, newcomer Hepburn was generously accorded equal above-the-title billing with Peck: he knew that the film belonged to her anyway and wasn't one to stand on ceremony.
Dalton Trumbo wrote this under a Black-List-dodging cover, for a start; couple this with Director William Wyler's known insistence for precision-engineered scripting and you know you're going to be presented with a beautifully-shaped and paced experience.

dOc DVD Review: Roman Holiday (1953)
On the surface, Roman Holiday doesn't seem like it should be much of a film, this trifle of a story about a princess who feels confined by her royalty and runs away from the palace to discover what life is really like.
This piece follows the creation of the film from casting to release, and supplements behind-the-scenes photos with lots of interviews with surviving crew and cast and with the daughter of William Wyler.
Aside from various facts and trivia about the film, there is footage of screenwriter Dalton Trumbo speaking in front of the House Committee on Un-American Activities (Frank Capra was, in fact, set to direct until he learned that a fllisted writer had produced the screenplay).

 Roman Holiday (1953)
It is easily one of the most charming films to ever hit the big screen and manages to be romantic, dramatic, bittersweet, and funny all at the same time.
It was one of the better films of the 1950’s; it is one of reputed director William Wyler’s best outings; and has the splendid distinction of introducing the world to Audrey Hepburn — one of the classiest and most beautiful women to ever walk the face of the earth, much less grace the big screen.
In an interesting story, which is actually related in one of the DVD extras, Gregory Peck recalls a conversation he had with the studio where he demanded that Hepburn, in her first “big” role, receive equal billing in the film’s credits.

Maybe it doesn't quite live up to its sterling reputation, and maybe the leading man and director were slightly miscast.
Long time Hollywood studio director William Wyler directed the film entirely on location in Rome.
He has a formidable list of credits going well back into the silent film era including such outstanding films as Wuthering Heights (1939), The Letter (1940), The Little Foxes (1941), etc. His clear directorial style and his attention to detail work well here.

It's the classic story that has been done over and over (and over) again by countless imitators and wannabes since its release in 1953, and after so many failed attempts to capture the magic that practically emanates from this William Wyler gem, it's nice to finally see where it all began.
