I’m sure it’s been described as “a high octane thrill ride”, and even on the box it says Hard Boiled is “an action fan’s dream”.

 The Criterion Collection: Hard Boiled
That Hard Boiled would be action director John Woo’s last film made in Hong Kong before his emigration to the U.S. in 1992 resonates throughout the picture.
With their barely intersecting fates, Tequila and Tony know each other too little and too late for total bonding, and as passionate friendship is the way to redemption in a Woo film, the ending of Hard Boiled brings the bitter knowledge that there may finally be peace for his characters, but there is no redemption.
So is realizing the difference between Hong Kong’s surface, an intensely law-abiding city where gun ownership is strictly prohibited, and its underworld, where fortunes are said to be made in arms sales, and where the gangster Triads infiltrate every industry, including the film industry, allegedly in league with powerful cities in mainland China.

Hong Kong Cinema - Hard Boiled (1992) - John Woo and Chow Yun Fat
Hard Boiled, is arguably John Woo's best-known pre-Hollywood work and the same can be said for the film's lead, Chow Yun Fat.
This is largely due to John Woo deciding to retain his talents after his work on Once a Thief in 1991 (which incidentally took HK $14,000,000 more than Hard Boiled, but does not enjoy anywhere near the same recognition).
At this budget price with new audio options, Hard Boiled will be opened up to the wider market and I suspect prove a very successful purchase for Prism.

Hard Boiled - Frank Miller, Geof Darrow - Graphic novel review
Hard Boiled has a post-Blade Runner human-like robots and consciousness plot, which might not be the most original of tales but is treated with maximum style and panache by Miller's sparing pen.
This leaves Darrow to fill the gaps with his stunning artwork, filled with minute detail that'll have you poring over each frame, watching the individual pieces fly off crashing cars and disintegrating robots.

The characterizations and atmospheric detail with which pulp stories are so rich help expand their plots to novella length, while the need to sustain a single atmosphere, and the lack of a strong classical plot tended to make the tales hard to sustain to book dimensions.
