Like its opening shot, Hard Eight keeps us wanting to see more, and is equally satisfying in the ways that it does and doesn't permit that to happen.
Although its cast includes Samuel L. Jackson as a hooligan with philosophical pretensions, Anderson's film doesn't aspire to the ecstatic riffs and grand-guignol fl comedy of Tarantino's, and its keynote action is drawing on a cigarette rather than drawing a gun.
Hard Eight wouldn't be the compelling story it is without Philip Baker Hall as its center of gravity and values.

Although I didn't care for Hard Eight nearly as much as I liked Anderson's followup, Boogie Nights, but his first effort stands as a decent little movie that works well on its own.
Hard Eight definitely is worth a rental, and would probably make a nice permanent addition to your collection as well.

Well, anyways for a debut "Hard Eight" is really good and is worth checking out by any fan of his.
Since probabilistically the hardest way to roll an eight is with two fours, that's called a "hard eight." Such a choice occurs twice in the movie, and symbolically a "hard eight" may represent the gambler's psychology.
However, "Hard Eight" is not his best movie, and even though it's very interesting, the plot is not very complex, and this movie gives the impression that could have been a better movie.

"Hard Eight" is very much unlike P.T.'s two well known films, "Magnolia" and "Boogie Nights." Unlike his two masterpieces, "Hard Eight" utilizes a very small cast and works on a drastically smaller scale.
While it is not in the same league as his other works, "Hard Eight" is certainly worthy of at least one viewing.
While basically every aspect of "Hard Eight" is skillfully done, there is just not enough meat to the story to really push the film over the top, into the ranks of P.T.'s other works.

When "Hard Eight" was released four years ago, the landscape of American cinema was still littered with throwaay Tarantino knockoffs--every film and it's mother wanted to be "Pulp Fiction" x 2.

It was sometimes difficult to pick up number eight to continue, where the first seven books in this series were difficult to put down.
Evanovich has written her character to be a realist, she is not rich or famous and she does not care what people think.
