The Mississippi Legislative biographical record states, "His paternal ancestors came from Virginia to Georgia in the early part of the last century; his great-grandfather, Walden Lewis, fought in the Indian Wars." Although probably true, to date there are no records to verify this claim.
The subsequent battles between the Creeks and the Americans became known as the Red Stick War where factions of Creek Indians eradicated white intruders into Creek lands in what is now Mississippi and Alabama and raided settlements in western Georgia.
Creeks attacked settlers in the western portion of the county, in what is now Hard Labor Creek State Park, northwest of the town of Rutledge.
