Hard Rain is too intense for younger audiences, and the violence and profanity definitely warrant the R-rating.

It would be easy to dismiss the entertaining, but decidedly lightweight action film "Hard Rain" as mere fluff, were it not for the memories of last summer's dreadful "Speed 2: Cruise Control." That leaden monstrosity served as a primer on how to screw up an action movie.
Water is notoriously hard to handle, so the creators of "Hard Rain" moved the production into a contained environment, building an extremely detailed replica of Huntingburg in a massive aircraft hangar in Palmdale, California.
"Hard Rain" was originally called "The Flood" and was scheduled for release last summer, but the film was pulled from the schedule and the name changed due to fears it would be mistaken as a disaster movie.

Cranky finds it hard to believe that not one of the hundred or so folk that worked on this flick or who read this script caught the error.

It isn't rain which is falling from the heavens in Hard Rain, it's ammunition or guns loaded with same.

"Hard Rain" is rated R for violence, profanity, gore, some vulgar references and a scene featuring an attempted rape.

Hard Rain is the case of a movie that gets progressively worse with every passing minute.

The miniatures and CGI are kept to a minimum; this is a big, old-fashioned build-it-and-do-it movie, and for the most part, the movie looks pretty cool as a result.
In fact, I remember a moment of disorientation when somebody towards the end of the movie refers to someone else by name (a line like "What about ______?" or something), and I had to stop for a second to think to myself, "Who?" before remembering that it was one of the main characters.
If it were up to me, Hard Rain will die a fast death at the box office as a lesson to Hollywood to quit making derivative high-concept drivel like this.

Hard Rain Movie Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
"Hard Rain", an $80 million mating of the disaster and heist genres, was originally christened with the less-than-spine tingling title "The Flood" and slated for release in the early summer of 1997.
The action sequences are less-than-thrilling, and the few shining moments that there are in this movie suffer from a been-there-done-that sentiment resulting from "Titanic" beating it to the theaters, especially two sequences with Tom and Karen each being locked up or handcuffed with the water rising around them.
Though the trailers make "Hard Rain" look like an exciting movie full of visceral thrills and a premise rich with dramatic potential, this waterlogged heist/disaster movie is saddled with a far-fetched narrative, slow pacing, uninspired dialogue, and the mercurial motivations of the characters.

 Hard Rain Movie Review
The movie opens with a stunning piece of cinematography where the camera starts at the flooded dam, then slowly makes it way across the country side, into town and ends up with a close-up of the Sherrif (played by Randy Quaid) organising the evacuation.
This plot twist is nice for the thriller and chase aspects of the movie as it changes the whole perspective of the audience - but overall the change in character of the three is somewhat unconvincing and doesn't entirely make sense given some of their earlier actions.
All in all this was an enjoyable movie that I see as an oppurtunity lost to make a really break-thru movie much like Speed was (man I wish they'd used the jet skis more often), but it is still a very watchable movie.

The water level is high and the intelligence level is low in "Hard Rain," an early candidate for 1998's wettest film.
That's quite a claim in these days of "Titanic" and even "Oscar and Lucinda," but "Hard Rain," at least in one respect, stands apart: While the former two movies press water into the service of a compelling story, the deluge implied in the title of the latter pretty much is the story.

In an apparent response to the lukewarm reaction to Hollywood's last two disaster epics, the dueling volcano movies Dante's Peak and Volcano, the makers of Hard Rain (formerly known as The Flood) have tweaked the usual disaster formula a bit, melding traditional disaster elements with more slam-bang action.

Review (B) Hard Rain, previously titled The Flood, is a wet and wild thriller starring Christian Slater, Morgan Freeman, Randy Quaid, and Minnie Driver.
Randy Quaid is the sheriff who's character takes a dramatic shift partway through the movie, and Minnie Driver is the helpless not-so-helpless female along for the ride to provide some wet shirt action (that's what I'm guessing, at least), but luckily they didn't bog down the movie with any love interest scenes.

Grab your slickers and galoshes, it's 'Hard Rain,' the dark new action-thriller from Paramount Pictures starring water -- so much water you honestly expect to see wrinkly skin at any given moment.

JoBlo reviews the movie "Hard Rain"
Popcorn Movie (definition): A movie which based on its merits of proper story-telling techniques, unique style and believable characters, would fail on all counts.
A Popcorn Movie is a film that allows you to turn off your brain before viewing, crunch down on plenty of nachos and popcorn without having to worry about missing any relevant dialogue, and revel in its lunacy of plot, excessive action sequences and shallow objectives.
Originally titled THE FLOOD, this movie is packed with superficial characters (save Freeman who pulls off some three-dimension), endless chases and gunfights, plenty of rain, water and more rain, and enough cheezy dialogue and plot holes to make any other "Popcorn Movie" candidate beet-red jealous.

 Hard Rain - Movie Tome
It may not be a disaster movie, per se, but this terminally silly thriller is certainly disastrous, and would be pointless without the novelty of its setting in a flooding Midwestern town during a torrential rainfall.
Physically impressive but idiotic in every other respect, the movie pits an armored truck courier (Christian Slater) against a smart leader of thieves (Morgan Freeman) and a corruptible town sheriff (Randy Quaid) who are vying for possession of $3 million in cash.

After some extremely heavy rain, the river near a small Indiana town is overflowing and the dam is about to burst.
The puzzling aspect is the continuously well-lit look of the town, which should have lost power early on, and with the storm clouds filling the sky, no moonlight should have pervaded.
Of course, if the screen were pitch fl, it might have been a less interesting movie, although I guess that's hard to imagine.

"Hard Rain" features Morgan Freeman as the "bad guy", but once we get to know him, we find that he's really not that bad after all.
It's really surprising to see him "slumming" in a film like this, but he does bring an unexpected air of dignity to what would have otherwise been a standard action flick.
Anyway, while it's no "Speed", "Hard Rain" is a suitably diverting way to spend an hour and a half.

Cleverly, Young works several of the legendary Toots Thielemans' chromatic harmonica solos into the music, which act as a theme to depict the movie's bad guys, led by Morgan Freeman, and there are a couple of minor themes which represent the central character of the movie - the Hard Rain itself.
The score starts well, with the main title 'Hard Rain', which introduces the heroic main theme, and 'The Jet Ski Chase (Part 1)', which has some lovely interplay between different parts of the brass section, most notably through some repeated horn motifs.
They are all well composed and, in the film, drive along the various chase scenes perfectly but, as a standalone listening experiences, they tend to become a little overbearing and repetitive after a while.
