Hard space - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In computing, the term hard space has several meanings, all related to a special way of representing the whitespace between characters.
The most commonly used meaning is the same as non-breaking space: a special space character used by a word processor that forbids an automatic line breaking (line wrap) at its position.
A hard space on a PC is commonly entered by holding down the ALT key and pressing 0160 on the numeric pad, or by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+SPACE.

Chris Moriarty Science Fiction (Hard SF)
Space Opera, Hard SF, and the Respectability Trap One of the most important of genrebending influences in contemporary SF as a whole is the reunification of Hard SF with its much-maligned little sister, Space Opera.
Hard SF is a toolkit, not an ideology -- and it's there to be used by anyone who's willing to hit the books and sweat through the equations.
In short, hard SF is the most unexclusive exclusive club there is. Of course, if you don't believe in the objectivity of quantitative analysis or the knowability of the unverse, then you might have trouble finding a place for yourself in hard SF.

Memory v Storage Space   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Another key difference between memory and hard drive space is that the data stored on a hard disk is not lost when the PC is turned off.
The more RAM memory is installed the less the system will have to dip into free disk space via paging (and memory upgrades are a worthwhile upgrade as hard drive space used as Virtual Memory is nowhere as fast as actual memory) however the demands of multitasking are such that space will be required often.
If one has multiple partitions and encounters insufficient memory errors due to low free disk space on C one option is to change the default Virtual Memory settings and have the system use space on a drive other than C for the swapfile.

Hard disk manufacturers use decimal megabytes (1,000,000 bytes) in their advertising, and BIOS auto-detect routines use the same measure.

Hard drives are similar to warehouses, with the exception that the employees working at these particular warehouses do not always know where to put inventory, so they store it away randomly, mostly without rhyme or reason.

A New Breed of Space Opera
Space opera, that wonderful genre of rip-roaring adventuring among the stars, was established in the 1920s by E. "Doc" Smith, one of the founders of modern science fiction, and this continued during the Golden Age of Science Fiction (the late 1930s and early 40s).

This is near-future hard science ultratech SF, which is based on Vernor Vinge's concept of the Singularity and assumes astonishing technological progress in the coming century; in fact, in the next few years.

 Cost of Hard Drive Space
Hard drives identify themselves to the system BIOS using the "Identify Drive Data." The original design of the IDE interface allowed for values up to 16383 x 16 x 63 (around 8.4 GB) to be used in the Identify Drive Data.
The new hard disk's capacity was demonstrated in a laboratory.
When the cost of drive space drops to three cents per megabyte, then $300 will buy enough space to put an hour of video online, or $25 for posting five minutes of video, which is well within the reach of many individuals who now have a personal website.

Non-breaking space - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is also known as a hard space or fixed space.
It can also be used to get multiple spaces in a row in systems like HTML that reduce sequences of normal spaces to a single space.
The difference between a NBSP and a normal space is that, when a string including the NBSP comes at the end of the line, and is too long to fit, it will move the whole string to the next line (including the strings that the NBSP connects to).

Install the HDD you wish to recover the hidden partitions (hard drive T) on as the master drive in your system with a second drive as a slave (you can use Hard Drive X if you want to).
Now that you have shutdown prior to allowing Ghost to do its backup, you must remove the HDD we are attempting to expand (hard drive T which we had installed as master) and replace it with a drive that has an OS installed on it.
Hard drive X should now be the master and you should be able to boot into the OS on it.

If you are recording a whole side of an LP or cassette to hard disk, this may take as much as 450Mb (for a 45 minute side in CD quality).
Anything which requires two passes (such as Normalize) may take additional hard disk space (the equivalent of the whole recording plus the longest single track).
Hard disk space is now relatively cheap and it may be worth considering a new hard disk for recording your Audio - newer hard disks are also faster.

The software can be run several ways depending on the amount of free hard disk space you have and whether you wish to alter the config.txt file which sets certain performance variables.
This is because new files downloaded from the internet are written to local updating directories and if the software is running off the CD, these directories are also located on the CD and unable to be written to.
If you have copied part or all of the software to your hard drive (see questions on installation options), the 'config.txt' file located in the 'resources' folder can be edited.

Sufficient amount of free hard disk space is necessary for stable system operation, fast startup, multitasking, and processing large amounts of data.
If less than 30 MB of free disk space are left on the hard disk you might experience such problems as overall system slowdown, program hang-ups, or in extreme cases, system crashes.
Therefore, it is important to delete unnecessary files on your hard disk regularly to keep your system stable.

These new chips internal to the hard drive have been upgraded and enhanced, so a 6.4 gigabyte hard drive is many times faster than a 2.5 gigabyte hard drive manufactured just a few years ago.
A new hard drive may require a complete reload of your system software and related data, so be sure to back up your system before you start working.
When it comes to what brand to buy, many people chose the same manufacturer that made their original hard drive, and this can be especially true if you are going to add a hard drive to your system instead of replacing the current one.

If you use the default setting for Full Text Indexing (the default is recommended for increased speed) you should periodically use the Reclaim Hard Space function to allow DocuXplorer to rebuild the indexes to include any changes made to a document's index information.

Space age hard drives to revolutionise storage
AS HARD DRIVE manufacturers push more capacity and faster interfaces into their products, expect many of them to start moving out of their no-frills "vanilla" offerings and adding more "sprinkles" to their products, similar to the way the flash memory community has moved out of "vanilla" offerings.
Hard drive manufacturers are just starting to move out of the vanilla phase and adding a small dash of sprinkles, mainly by encasing their products into external cases and slapping a USB 2.0 and/or Firewire interfaces on them, plus a side of software.
Perhaps the next brave step for drive manufacturers is to move into multimedia, by taking a hard drive and putting enough electronics on it to serve as a media storage centre.

RealSky Data and hard drive access
Because a large hard disk is now priced at about $80.00 for ~60 gigabytes (about $1.25/gigabyte) of storage or 200 for $100.00!, so drive space is very inexpensive and very easy to come by.
If you had purchased a 20 gigabyte hard disk and are running 98/ME thinking that this was plenty of room for the RealSky data you would find to your dismay that the Windows 98/ME formatting because of sector size will not hold all of the RealSky data.
If the hard drive is brand new and needs to be formatted from scratch you can create a single smaller dedicated partition for the RealSky data using 512 byte sectors to optimally hold the RealSky data in the native 10.1 gigabytes of space.

Recommendation: "Missing" free space on a hard disk is often caused by a combination of different causes.
Various problem situations can cause clusters on the hard disk to be marked as used when no file is using them, and that space is then legitimately "missing".
Compressed volumes themselves only estimate the amount of free space on a volume, because they cannot know how much will fit on the disk until the files are copied there (since different files compress different amounts).
