2003 NEA National Heritage Fellowships: Ron Poast - Interview by Mary K. Lee
The Hardanger fiddles were made by a lot of individuals years ago so there's quite a bit of variation from one instrument to another.
Most of the Hardanger fiddles will have some type of a mythical dragon for the head on the instrument where on a violin it would have a scroll design.
Of course, the Hardanger fiddle is considered the national instrument of Norway.

The significance of the Hardanger fiddle in Sweden
The Hardanger fiddle could possibly have inherited its flat bridge and fingerboard from the fidla, but I believe its body shape is derived from the Italian violin, modified to suit an older rustic Nordic tone ideal, to get a sound perhaps nearer to that of the fidla.
It seems to show a fiddle with a standard peg box (with four pegs) and a slightly raised section on the top of the instrument running from where the neck attaches down to the end of the tailpiece that presumably covered the resonance strings inside the body of the instrument.

The instrument has a lot of decoration, with a carved animal (usually the Lion of Norway) or a carved woman's head as part of the scroll at the top of the pegbox, mother of pearl in the tailpiece and fingerboard, and fl ink decorations called 'rosing' on the body of the instrument.

The Hardanger fiddle is unusual enough in the UK that a description of it is probably justified; it is to Norway as the hurdy-gurdy is to Centre-France or the bagpipes to Scotland; a national instrument, though most typical of western and central Norway.
However, the most striking feature of the Hardanger fiddle is undoubtedly its appearance; tradition demands ornate and fantastic decoration of inlaid mother-of-pearl and fl ink line drawings, frequently over the whole body of the instrument and even the fingerboard, in a style that has not been seen in Europe outside a museum since the 1700s.
