'American Hardcore'   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Filmmakers Paul Rachman and Steven Blush unearthed a treasure of ratty old footage and did exhaustive interviews to bring to light such heavy-hitters as Black Flag, the Circle Jerks, Bad Brains, Minor Threat, MDC and SS Decontrol.
Hardcore reared its ugly head at a time when the original punk scene was losing steam, unemployment was high, suburban youth were listless and bored and Reagan was promising a return to conservative values.
While British and New York punk had major-label backing and a modicum of media support, the hardcore ethic was pure DIY (do-it-yourself) as none of this stuff had even a remote chance of mass appeal.

  Urban Dictionary: hardcore
I think it's unfortunate that people these days pick out all the trappings of hardcore, the fashion trends, the image (there are tons of images) and limit hardcore to just that, since it suits their superficial way that they approach the world.
Hardcore refers to all of these styles, though metalcore is best used to identify bands like Throwdown or Converge (who don't really sound anything alike but both mix metal and hardcore).
People talking about old-school hardcore should be referring to one of the hardcore sounds that developed in the '80s, regardless of when the band formed.

Film celebrates Hub's hardcore past - The Boston Globe
But back in the day -- and ``the day" is defined by the documentary ``American Hardcore," which opens Friday, as being roughly 1980-85 -- Boston had a unique standing in the nationwide underground community of hardcore punk rock, that largely undocumented and unhistoricized youth movement that was the most vigorous alternative to Reagan's America.
Musically, hardcore was punk abbreviated, shorn of its last traces of bluesiness and rock 'n' roll affectation.
The suburban complexion of Boston hardcore was one factor in its peculiar zealotry: Not an inner-city phenomenon, the scene was defined by the energy and ideals imported by teenagers from the north and south.

Feral House | Titles | Music | American Hardcore
Hardcore, the hard-edged second generation of punk rock, whose peak period ranged from 1980 to 1986, has never before been captured in the way Steven Blush’s authoritative, extensively illustrated oral history revisits its dynamic and sordid past.
All the major hardcore scenes, particularly in Southern California, San Francisco, Washington D.C., Boston, New York City and Texas are given provocative voice through its major players, from drugged-out suburban Metal misfits to shit-kicking skinheads to vegan anti-drug pacifists.
Author Steven Blush was a prime mover in the scene he writes about; in the ’80s, he promoted many hardcore tours and shows, DJ’d an influential college radio show, and ran a record label.
