Emo - Encyclopedia Dramatica   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Although it is often mistaken as being short for "emotional," emo was originally the abbreviation for a type of music known as "emotive hardcore".
Emo music performances were extremely dramatic, typicalling including lead singers falling to their knees and screaming or crying.
Because traditional hardcore contained a lot less whining and a lot more beating people up, "emo" soon became a taunting nickname used by punkers to insult other, more sensitive members of the hardcore scene.

Hardcore Emo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Many Hardcore Emo bands are often misinterpreted as Emo Violence bands.
Hardcore Emo took the emo sound of bands like Indian Summer, Embassy, Current, Still Life, etc. and made it faster and much more chaotic.
Today the style is rarely played in its purest form, but it was the primary influence on late 90s/early 00s bands which started the "screamo revival" such as Orchid, Jerome's Dream and Usurp Synapse.

 The Emo Riddle
Where the hardcore scene prided itself on outward looking lyrics, emo was looking inward to focus on affairs of the heart or the personal situations that propelled self-pity and melancholy (loneliness, relationship problems and friendship problems).
For emo, it's Indian Summer (and I don't mean the 1970’s dandies) - a band that have grown in stature and regard after their premature break-up in 1994.
In the most vague terms, however, emo music has a spiralling structure that relies on large, crescendo-ish climaxes that usually play off against a quieter and more reflective passage - a juxtaposition that, in the most rudimentary and reductive analysis imaginable, is suggestive of the fickle and fraught nature of humanity.

 Decoymusic.com - Definition of "EMO"
Emo (an abbreviation of "emotionally-driven hardcore punk" or just "emotional-hardcore") is a term now broadly used to describe almost any form of guitar-driven alternative rock that expresses emotions beyond traditional punk's limited emotional palette of alienation and rage.
Today, the term "emo" is increasingly ambiguous, and is often used disparagingly to describe something that is overly sentimental or melodramatic, and is used in a similar way to the usage of "gay" as a derogatory adjective.
For one, because the emo scene is very DIY-oriented, hair that is not professionally cut is considered to be more scene than hair that is. Emo kids have their friends cut their hair, or they cut it themselves.

Hardcore died in the early 80's because of the Emo movement in part, but also directly from the act of Ian Mackaye disbanding Minor Threat(mistakenly labelled a "straight edge" band for the song of the same name) and forming the band "Embrace".
From then on- bands within the hardcore genre that were newly forming were often called "post-hardcore", referring to a new wave of hardcore bands after the initial death of it- just as you hear many new wave style bands being referred to as a "post-punk", and even fugazi is called this sometimes.
As for screamo- Saetia broke up in '99, by which time the hardcore movement had essentially reignited itself- but it had combined with metal in many cases, as the members of a lot of these bands came of age in the "Age of metal": the 1980's and early 90's.
