Tales of Kidd Funkadelic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The tracks were recorded at the same time as Hardcore Jollies, and were found to be lacking; hence, they were not included on that album and were belatedy thrown together to form Tales of Kidd Funkadelic.
The album is perhaps a bit too varied, at least when compared to their usual strong concepts, but presents a strong set of tracks nonetheless, some of which are still occasionally played live.
Kidd Funkadelic was/is the nickname for guitarist Mike Hampton, who incidentally is a shadow force on this album, while featured strongly on the sibling Funkadelic album of the year, Hardcore Jollies.

Funkadelic Funkadelic - The Whole Funk And Nothing But The Funk CD
HARDCORE JOLLIES WAS, BACK THEN, AN ALBUM that had a lot of us worried: Funkadelic and a major label was, surely, a contradiction in terms … Why leave Westbound, a label that clearly respected their vision?
Whereas such a significant proportion of Hardcore Jollies looked forward, it was the couple of years in between that and One Nation Under A Groove that provided the catalyst for that next statement.
It was time to put the broader concepts that had been hinted at on Hardcore Jollies together with the understanding of what makes a hit in late-1970s fl America gained from Parliament’s and Bootsy’s successes, and hitch all of that to the momentum P Funk had been building up.

1975 brought Funkadelic to Warner Brothers, and saw the release of Hardcore Jollies in 1976.
The same year, Westbound released archived tracks as Tales of Kidd Funkadelic, which did significantly better than Hardcore Jollies and included "Undisco Kidd," a R+B Top 30 single.
In 1977, Westbound capitalized on the success of Tales of Kidd Funkadelic by releasing The Best of the Early Years.

Detailed info on Funkadelic's _Hardcore Jollies_
"Hardcore Jollies" is the best examples of Michael going off, and he's well matched by Jerome Brailey thumping the skins.
The live version of "Cosmic Slop" is sort of out of place, and not particularly well-mixed, but it's nice to hear the 'Space People' intro and some good guitar work.
The transitional nature of the project does not mean a decline in quality, rather it means that songwriting is varied and fascinatingly quirky in its subject matter.

BEATBOTS Reviews: Funkadelic - Hardcore Jollies
Hardcore Jollies doesn't feature any of the crazy free form noise found in Maggot Brain.
It is the album of a band out of new ideas and rehashing watered down versions of their psychedelic funk.
Funkadelic might have been the link between Sly & the Family Stone and James Brown, but Hardcore Jollies fails to demonstrate that this actually makes Funkadelic any good.

Hardcore Jollies provides the most “classic” Funkadelic cuts, driven more by Eddie Hazel’s guitar than by the rhythm section.

For some reason I don't quite understand a lot of reviewers of Funkadelic's "Hardcore Jollies" album seem to consider this to be one of their lesser efforts.
The boss man Clinton sings this one, and it is a decent enough song, one of many "explainin' the funk anthems" he has written, it just doesn't seem to fit in with the overall sound of the rest of the album.
Side one ends with the title tune "Hardcore Jollies", an instrumental showcase for the guitarists in the band.

Reinforced by Steve Albini’s no-frills production job, the guitar work comes off just as shameless as the lyrics, which singer Ralph Cuseglio (a burly Jersey lug with the performance habits of Prince) delivers with shrieks, screams, and sobs, like a 15-year-old Sunset Strip kid singing in his shower.
Occasionally the band’s post-hardcore background creeps through, and the return of second guitarist Herb Wiley (who left the group for college after appearing on a handful of singles and splits) leads to occasional moments of syncopation, dissonance and depth that belie band’s hardcore roots.
The best cuts come when the dumb horny gringo meets the college rock nerd halfway, of course.

Funkadelic was the "rock" half of P-Funk, de-emphasizing the horns, keyboards and kiddie rhythms of Parliament in favor of metallic guitars, a more forceful backbeat and a more adult, political lyrical outlook.

George Clinton and Funkadelic (formerly Parliament) released four crucial albums over the course of four years that would change the perception of funk music forever and put fl rock on the map.
Hardcore Jollies- George Clinton and his boys dug into their bag of tricks and pulled out a movin' and grooving rockin' mix of selections on this release.
They said what they meant and meant what they said when they sang "If You Got Funk, You Got Style." In addition, on the now classic "Cosmic Slop," they put together a cluster of different sounds all thrown into a one boiling musical pot and stirred it around to make their musical slop.

Fantastic writing and musicianship coupled with clever lyrics is something we've come to expect from George Clinton, and this album is one of his best.
"Jollies" is a very much guitar-driven affair, with no real horns and minimal keyboard presence, and Funkadelic's guitarists are more than qualified to be your sonic tourguides on this funkalogical safari.
Most reviewers, fans, and critics will dote upon the more famous of the tracks- "Comin Round the Mountain," "Smokey," "Hardcore Jollies," and a live take on Eddie Hazel's phenominal "Cosmic Slop"- and deservingly so.

Judge Manuel L. Real concluded that Clinton had been defrauded of his creative works, which involved the complicity of his former employees, a member of his former management team and his lawyers.
