What up, gangsta? The hardcore rap of the '90s
Rap may have been nothin' but a New York thing for most of the '80s, but the West Coast was about to rise up, and it didn't sound anything like the Eagles.
A year later, Ice T hit with the most controversial song in the history of rap, "Cop Killer." Arriving in the wake of the Rodney King incident and just before the L.A. riots, it was written from the perspective of a man out to "get even" for police brutality.
Reflecting on the hardcore style of rap's gangstas and street reporters of the '90s, Nelson George says, "What was really serious was the fact that crack was overwhelming all these neighborhoods.

Hardcore hip hop - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hardcore hip hop is a form of hip hop music characterized by confrontation and aggression in its subject matter, its sparse yet heavy beats, or any combination thereof.
The origins of hardcore hip hop began in East Coast hip hop during the late 1980s, when artists such as Schoolly D, Boogie Down Productions, Slick Rick, the Beastie Boys, and Public Enemy began eschewing the popular themes of partying and braggadocio.
This new brand of hardcore hip hop was characterized by its minimalistic beats, gritty drum sounds that were often sampled from vinyl, occasional urban jazz and horn samples, and haunting string and piano samples.

Gangsta rap - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gangsta rap is a subgenre of hip hop music which involves a lyrical focus on the lifestyles of inner-city or "da hood" gang members and other criminals.
Although crime and violence have always been part of hip hop's lyrical canon, before the rise of gangsta rap the subject was not often embraced or addressed so blatantly.
Gangsta rap was pioneered by Ice-T, N.W.A. MC Eiht and other rappers who were influenced by Schoolly D's hardcore rap but still mixed in social commentary in their lyrics.

Successive albums found the trio improving their rapping and their production, as they slowly matured, moving progressively away from mere exploitation.
