Hardcore gamers are clearly different from casual gamers, and the characteristics of hardcore and casual gamers will also be different from those who are generally uninterested in interactive entertainment.
Hardcore gamers will play persistently for the enjoyment and exhilaration of defeating the game, and are likely to be more forgiving of aesthetic flaws such as poor acting or a trivial plot.
Casual gamers would not, for example, be inclined to play endlessly to their reduce lap-times in Gran Turismo by a fraction of a second, or have the patience to learn every combination attack in Street Fighter, or even to achieve a higher score.

 Gamers Know Best? - Aelon.net
I wouldn’t say that hardcore gamers are killing gaming since, as you note, they are in a minority and if you take their influence out of the equation then the mainstream are just as much to blame for not buying good, innovative games.
Hardcore gamers might be stuck in their ways and like playing clones of, for want of a better term, “benchmark games”, but if they are in a minority then by definition they are unlikely to both influence the mainstream gamer’s choice or the decisions of developers/publishers to make innovative games.
A hardcore gamer for the purpose of this article is the kind of gamer who plays the same game over and over, and deviates very little from their preferred game type.

When PC Gamer asked a PS3 scalper if they would trade their place in line and sign a waiver saying that they would never, EVER own a PS3 in exchange for a $7500 custom Falcon PC, it was an easy call to make; Of course we would take the PC, just like he did.
Apparently gamers are so hypnotized at the thought of a real-live female breast, that people think they can sell their PS3 more effectively on EBay just by including a shot of a PS3 next to someone's perky set of C cups.

It really shouldn’t be surprising that studies are showing that so-called “casual gamers” are hardcore about their game.
The reason, of course, that the industry tends to label these casual is that to the hardcore gamer, the simpler rulesets of the casual games look like, well, a hotdog does to a gourmet, the way Boone’s Farm looks to an oenophile, the way Billy Joel looks to a fan of Bach.
At it’s heart it seems like Hardcore players are achivers who want to draw a line between themselves and others, while casual players want to have fun with as little time-related restrictions to that as possible.

Zeschuk: The hardcore gamer demographic will continue to grow as the industry grows; however, it might shrink proportionally against the wider swath of more casual gamers that are joining the market with the increasingly mainstream targeting of the new console systems.
Ultimately, since we regard hardcore gamers more as experts in a specific type of game, there are more and more of these types of fans over time -- each specialized in a different genre of game.
