Atherosclerosis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arteriosclerosis, is a general term describing any hardening (and loss of elasticity) of medium or large arteries (in Latin, Arterio meaning artery and sclerosis meaning hardening), arteriolosclerosis is arteriosclerosis mainly affecting the arterioles (small arteries), atherosclerosis is a hardening of an artery specifically due to an atheromatous plaque (in Latin Athero means porrige-like).
Arteriosclerosis ("hardening of the artery") results from a deposition of tough, rigid collagen inside the vessel wall and around the atheroma.
Arteriolosclerosis (hardening of small arteries, the arterioles) is the result of collagen deposition, but also muscle wall thickening and deposition of protein ("hyaline").

What Is Meant By Hardening Of The Arteries
The hardening of the arteries that is like the hardening of the muscle in the boy's arm is due to a contraction of the arteries because they are irritated by poisons circulating in the blood, or' to nervous causes, or to poor heart action.
Functional hardening of the arteries is due to the contraction of the muscular middle coat of the vessels.
Functional hardening of the arteries is a matter of high importance in all heart patients, in all kidney patients, and in many forms of chronic diseases, because it is the point where many diseases cause harm ; at the same time, it is capable of being prevented and cured, chiefly by hygienic measures.

Philippine News Online: Hardening of the arteries in the young
Hardening of the arteries, medically known as arteriosclerosis, is a disease where blood clots and cholesterol deposits adhere to the inner wall of the arteries, eventually making the arteries lose its normal elasticity and transforming them into hard, or even calcified, pipes, whose caliber is narrowed or even totally blocked as years go by.
Hardening of the arteries by itself does not cause any problems, so long as their function and capacity to transport blood to the muscles and vital organs is not impaired or reduced.
Usually, hardening of the arteries in the young is partly genetic (hereditary) and partly acquired.

Hardening of the arteries (or atherosclerosis) is a degenerative disease of large and medium sized arteries.
Hardening of the arteries is not an inevitable result of ageing, but it is more common in the elderly.
For instance carotid endarterectomy is an operation to fix the damage caused by hardening of the carotid arteries in the neck.

Arteriosclerosis - Hardening of the Arteries - Alternative&Natural Health Remedies
Arteriosclerosis is a term which describes a series of diseases in which the walls of the arteries become thickened and loose their ability to stretch.
Arteriosclerosis affects the large arteries and has been found to be the underlying condition in most cases of coronary heart disease, aortic aneurysms, peripheral vascular disease, and stroke.
Hardening of the arterial walls is due to deposits of plaque, composed of lipids, cholesterol crystals and calcium salts, which build up, thereby narrowing and reducing the space available for our blood to flow.

Atherosclerosis (arteriosclerosis - hardening of the arteries)
The result is that the arteries become constricted, their elasticity disappears and the volume of blood able to travel through them at any given time is reduced.
Atherosclerotic disease of the arteries in the neck (carotids) to the kidneys (renal) and to the limbs can potentially also be treated by techniques which introduce devices through the skin into accessible arteries, which are guided on to the diseased areas.
A balloon is passed through the coronary arteries to the constricted parts where it is expanded to enlarge the blood vessels and improve the flow of blood.

This led the researchers to reason that lack of estrogen might be a key factor in hardening of the arteries, a process that often occurs with age.

More importantly, the arteries of postmenopausal women taking hormone replacement therapy showed signs of much less deterioration than their age-mates who were not taking estrogen.

Heart disease is also referred to as coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis, atherosclerotic heart disease or hardening of the arteries.
The arteries in your heart (coronary arteries), which are about the size of a strand of spaghetti, are blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients that feed the heart muscle.
This occurs when one of the coronary arteries (the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle) is blocked by an obstruction, which is often plaque due to heart disease.

Hardening of Arteries Linked With Depression
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The greater the degree of hardening of the arteries (a.k.a., atherosclerosis), the more strongly it is tied to depression late in life, according to findings from a Dutch study.
Ultrasound was used to measure thickening of the carotid artery supplying blood to the brain, and the aorta was assessed by x-ray.
More severe atherosclerosis, in both the carotid artery and the aorta, was associated with increased risk of a depressive disorder -- even when demographic factors and a prior heart attack were taken into account.

Hardening of the Arteries Linked to Air Pollution - DERT
Background: Thickening of the lining of the carotid artery is a marker of early hardening of the arteries or atherosclerosis.
Arterial vessel wall changes occur during a presumably long lag phase characterized by a gradual thickening of the arterial lining; however, the clinical symptoms of heart disease often do not arise until the stage of advanced atherosclerosis.
The associations between exposure and arterial lining thickening were stronger for older subjects, for women, for persons taking lipid-lowering medications, and for people who had never smoked.

Hardening of the Arteries Shown to be Significantly Slowed by Diet and Exercise
Normally, post-menopausal women show great increases in atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, but the study showed that those who engaged in rather moderate dietary changes and pursued what I consider to be a very small amount of physical exercise were able to slow the onset of atherosclerosis by half.
This is fascinating news that shows how much power individuals have to control their own health outcome by making decisions about the foods they eat and the level of physical exercise they choose to pursue.
I believe that hardening of the arteries is not a natural event -- this is not something that just occurs automatically as you age.

Hardening of the coronary arteries is more likely in wives when they and their husbands express hostility during marital disagreements, and more common in husbands when either they or their wives act in a controlling manner.
Each husband and wife was paid $150 to participate, and also received free of charge a $300 CT scan to look for calcification in their coronary arteries – the arteries that supply the heart muscle and that can cause a heart attack when clogged.
* The extent to which either wives or husbands acted in a dominant or controlling manner was unrelated to the severity of hardening of the arteries in the wives.
