In the county, the population was spread out with 23.10% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 26.60% from 25 to 44, 26.40% from 45 to 64, and 16.10% who were 65 years of age or older.
The median income for a household in the county was $27,819, and the median income for a family was $34,157.

Savannah, the modern county seat, is built partially within a wall and trench and amid a line of fourteen mounds on a bluff parallel to the Tennessee River.
Hardin was one of the few counties outside East Tennessee to vote against secession in both plebiscites.

The Tennessee River bisects the county from south to north.
The county is bordered on the south by Lauderdale county, Alabama, and Tishomingo county, Mississippi; on the east by Wayne County Tennessee, on the north by Decatur and Henderson counties, and on the west by Chester and McNairy counties, Tennessee.
The county is named for Colonel Joseph Hardin, who blazed a trail through Southwest Tennessee’s thick woodlands in the early 1800s to map 2,000 acres of rich land on the east side of the Tennessee River.

Patrols into the east Hardin County countryside occasionally brought in prisoners and confiscated mules, and at least one house was set on fire, although it was quickly pout out by others in the detachment.
