Topic: Hardin Richard Runnels

Handbook of Texas Online: RUNNELS, HARDIN RICHARD
Hardin R. Runnels, governor and legislator, the son of Hardin D. and Martha "Patsy" Burch (Darden) Runnels, was born on August 30, 1820, in Mississippi.
Runnels won by a vote of 38,552 to 23,628 and thus became the only person ever to defeat Sam Houston in an election.
Although Runnels supported and signed into law bills that called for the raising of temporary ranger battalions to meet the emergency, he opposed efforts to form permanent battalions on the grounds that the state could not afford them and that the federal government was responsible for protecting the frontier.

I was lucky enough that one of the National and State Archives were located in Atlanta, GA. I was surprised to find that there was a lady in Texarkana, TX who had inquired about my family name some years previously.
Some researchers spend hours, days, months and years; searching for information on their family when others have that information readily available to them and don't know how much it means to share.
I have enjoyed writing "Runnels and Their Relationships - The Governor’s Line", "Runnels/Reynolds and Such - An Unfinished Work of Love", and "Kiefer and Their Relationships - A Collection of Family Information" published by The Gregath Publishing Co., P. Box 505, Wyandotte, OK 74370.
