Hardoi district is contiguous of Shahjahanpur and Lakhimpur Kheri districts on the north, Lucknow and Unnao districts on the south, Kanpur and Farrukhabad districts on the west and Sitapur district on the east.
Hardoi is located at 110 km from Lucknow (capital of Uttar Pradesh) and 394 from New Delhi (capital of India).
In 1028, Bwan was invaded by Sayyid Salara Masgud.

It is traversed by the Oudh and Rohilkhand railway from Lucknow to Shahjahanpur, and its branches.
Hardoi, along with the rest of Oudh, became British territory under Lord Dalhousies proclamation of February 1856.

Under native rule the town possessed considerable political importance, and upon the British annexation of Oudh it was selected as the headquarters of the district, but was abandoned in favor of Hardoi after the Mutiny.

 Geography
The Ganga and the Sai are the main rivers of the district, the former making its western and southern boundaries and the latter, for the greater part of its course, forming its northern and eastern boundaries.
The only great river of the district is the Ganga which first touches the district near the village of Purwa Gahir, in pargana Bangarmau and flows south-eastward, seperating this district from districts Kanpur and Fatehpur.
The alluvium formation of the district, comprising sand, silt and clay with occassional gravel, is of the the early quaternary to sub-recent age.

The residents of Hardoi, a district about 100 km from the state capital, have themselves decided to switch to the tricolours after discussions with the state Transport Minister Naresh Agarwal, who hails from here.
Asking the authorities to strictly implement the encroachment drive in the district, Mr Agarwal announced he would provide an initial sum of Rs 60 lakh from various official funds for painting the stones on the footpath in three colours and then inter-locking them to give the effect of the tricolour.
Hardoi Nagar Palika chairman Ramprakash Shukla expressed hope that by this year end, a major portion of the town would be seen painted in the tricolour.
