Topic: Hardware Security Module

CREN - Hardware Security Modules   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The principal value of these hardware modules is that keys can be generated and stored in these boxes, and provide strong protection against removal from the box.
Hardware can protect against internal and external intruders by using two-factor authentication: both the hardware device and a password can be required activate the root key.
Hardware provides a higher level of security than non-secure media such as backup tapes, floppy diskettes, or smart cards, since the latter can be easily removed or copied.

Windows 2000 Server, PKI and the nCipher Hardware Security Module
By installing hardware security modules (HSMs) on certificate authorities, customers using Microsoft Windows 2000 Certificate Services and PKI are able to generate digital certificates and store encrypted keys at every level of their PKI solution.
Because HSMs provide a series of security enhancements to Windows 2000-based servers, this white paper is designed to be an administrative guide for using HSMs with PKI and asymmetric key operations in the deployment of Windows 2000.
A hardware security module (HSM), such as nCipher's nShield, is a hardware encryption device that's connected to a server at the device level via PCI or SCSI interfaces.

When a request for authentication is received, a cryptographically secure one-time password is generated using the corresponding user data record within the hardware security module and sent via the GSM transmitter by SMS.
The one-time password is encrypted in the hardware security module with the user's public key, which is part of the user data record, and then sent to the user's mobile phone via GSM transmitter.
In the security module, the one-time password, the amount of time already elapsed and the number of login attempts are checked and only the result of the check is reported back.

 ONS GLOBAL SECURITY SOLUTIONS
A highly secure server peripheral for the management of cryptographic keys and the protection of sensitive applications With cryptography now a fundamental component of many business-critical processes—authentication, authorization, digital signatures, time-stamping, secure transactions and more—protection of all cryptographic keys as well as the application operations themselves is vital.
Although dedicated HSMs are appropriate for security applications and servers that demand guaranteed availability and/or processing power, the netHSM provides a cost-effective deployment option for a variety of typical scenarios.
This is certainly true for database security - organisations need to assess what and where data is at risk, the impact of compromise and the cost and disruption involved in protecting the data at each point of risk, from application to storage.

In the public key cryptography, the key pair is generated on the module and the private key never leaves the module unencrypted.
Because keys are stored as encrypted and protected files ('key blobs') outside the physical confines of the hardware security module, there is virtually unlimited key storage available.
This allows companies to dictate their own security policy by deciding how many people will have access to their keys, and who those people are.

Lately I have been focusing on security and trying to use the book as an actual reference and found it has some big omissions and mistakes and is NOT a reference -- Which deserves a 1 -- I am however giving it a 2 because it has coverage of lots of subjects which are important.
If you are a beginner in the security area, this book may prove valuable, but be forwarned that you may be de-railed in some concepts as they are plain wrong.
Security is a constantly moving target, so some definitions are dated or lack accuracy, which is why I say it is just the 1st base.

Press Release - Reactivity Gateway Fully Integrates nCipher Hardware Security Module   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Firewall clusters are common, but without full integration of the hardware security module, deploying new policies certificates or hardware keys requires establishing a terminal session individually with each device in the cluster, logging on, copying files and entering special commands to make the necessary changes.
The nCipher hardware can be used to protect and accelerate SSL transactions between the client and server, or for supporting key Web services standards such as XML signature and encryption.
By decoupling security from application development, the Reactivity Gateway eliminates the time-consuming and costly process of custom coding such security into each application and maintaining it.

Why a Secure Server May Provide the Most Protection for Your Mission Critical Applications - Intel® Software ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
A Hardware Security Module (HSM) protects non-volatile, long-lived, sensitive information in the event that the Trusted Platform is physically penetrated or stolen.
The idea behind an HSM is that, even if someone were able to gain access to the inside of the server and remove the hard drive, they would not be able to get to the cryptographic information because it isn't on the drive to begin with.
Hardware secured key generation, storage, backup, and digital signing further enhance the security of the Trusted Platform.
