spaces are spaces of p-power integrable functions, and corresponding sequence spaces.
If S is the set of natural numbers, the space is usually denoted as ellp (ie., without the space indication).
The question of whether all Banach spaces have such an embedding was answered negatively by B. Tsirelson's construction of Tsirelson space in 1974.

Bill Ross The Backward Shift on the Hardy Space   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Description: Shift operators on Hilbert spaces of analytic functions play an important role in the study of bounded linear operators on Hilbert spaces since they often serve as models for various classes of linear operators.
For example, "parts" of direct sums of the backward shift operator on the classical Hardy space H^2 model certain types of contraction operators and potentially have connections to understanding the invariant subspaces of a general linear operator.
Other features of the volume include a description of applications to the spectral properties of the backward shift operator and a treatment of some general real-variable techniques that are not taught in standard graduate seminars.

On a separable infinite dimensional complex Hilbert space, we show that the set of hypercyclic operators is dense in the strong operator topology, and moreover the linear span of hypercyclic operators is dense in the operator norm topology.
We show that the translation operator on a Hilbert space of entire functions of slow growth is hypercyclic, which means that there is a function in the space whose translates are dense.
For the Dirichlet space of a finitely connected region, we study the structure of its subspaces that are invariant under the algebra of multiplication operators.

Washingtonpost.com: Hardy Microbes Appear Able to Survive in Space
The study of organisms is of more than frivolous interest: It bears on theories about the cosmic pathways that life might follow, such as the possibility that it arose elsewhere and traveled to Earth in chunks of rubble.
He is collaborating with pioneer Gerda Horneck and her colleagues at the German space organization DLR, who have spent three decades exposing microbes to space.
After six years riding in a dry preparation (as opposed to a liquid medium) in open space, Horneck's hardy spores showed an 80 percent survival rate when shielded from radiation — either by at least one other layer of sister spores or a thin layer of glucose and salts.

Once in Earth orbit, the lid of the container opened and the samples were exposed to the space environment for nearly 15 days before the lid resealed and the capsule returned to Earth.
The lichens were subjected to the vacuum of space and to temperatures ranging from -20°C on the night side of the Earth, to 20°C on the sunlit side.
In space, the lichens turned dormant and did not metabolize, but once returned to Earth, they returned to their normal activity and their DNA appeared not to have been damaged, Demets told New Scientist.

Streetsblog » Hugh Hardy: Architect Calls for Fresh Take on Public Life
Hardy, who designed 42nd Street’s New Victory Theater and the Atlantic Terminal in downtown Brooklyn, has made a career of designing urbane buildings near generic schlock.
In the talk, Hardy noted that "the world is changing" how New York imagines citizens’ capacity to share places: extended sidewalks and green patches under highways can be part of our urban vocabulary if the government will invest in them.
Already, Hardy said, sidewalk cafes and community-based activism are pushing this change in Lower Manhattan and elsewhere.

A Toeplitz operator is an operator on the Hardy space where we first multiply by a continuous function on the unit disc and then project back down to the Hardy space.
Well, if we multiply a holomorphic function in the Hardy space by a continuous function, the result need not be holomorphic, but its restriction to the unit circle is a well-defined element of L^2(T), which we may then project back down to the Hardy space.

Special attention is paid to some developments in the last 10–15 years which are closely related to the nowadays numerous applications of the theory of function spaces to some neighbouring areas such as numerics, signal processing and fractal analysis.
In particular, typical building blocks as (non-smooth) atoms, quarks, wavelet bases and wavelet frames are discussed in detail and applied afterwards to some outstanding problems of the recent theory of function spaces such as a local smoothness theory, fractal measures, fractal analysis, spaces on Lipschitz domains and on quasi-metric spaces.
The book is essentially self-contained, although it might also be considered as the continuation of the two previous books of the author with the same title which appeared as volumes 78 and 84 in this book series.
