This is the "harem anime" sub-genre, and it's one of the most popular types of series among shounen fans.
Harem anime are usually comedies with a bit of romance thrown in.
While some veteran anime fans seem to take less of a liking to harem anime simply because the formula has remained mostly the same, they are great for new anime fans or for people who like comedy or romance in their anime series.

The rest of the anime is about her life within the combination school and dormitory (and the massive amounts of girl to girl relationships around her - slice of life I suppose) and her off and on interaction with this representative (called the Etoile).
Anime's about a high school girl (yeah yeah yeah, stop pointing those wet noodles at me) who thinks the life she lives is boring - herself being an insigifnicant speck in the world.
Despite that, this anime definitely has its charm, as the characters have a realistic twist to their personalities that makes it easy for the viewer to relate with.

The thought occurred to me while I was watching the fascinating anime series Elfen Lied (from the German elfenlied, "elf's song," the third syllable a long /i/), the opening ten minutes of which may be some of the blood-spatteringest ever.
Still, from the obvious-on-its-face perspective, Cattet's reading of Girard may be spot on: the harem simply represents the universal male desire to be desired by attractive women, and the female desire to desire something that will reciprocate that desire, however juvenile the form of reciprocation.
Each of the women in the harem, in turn, represents one facet of the ideal mother/wife/sibling figure, from tomboy to sex kitten to kid sister to parent and traditional homemaker.

Is AMG harem anime? [Archive] - AnimeSuki Forum
With that said Harem Anime doesn't have to mean that they're physically involved, it could just mean that they look at each other in sexual ways, that they are interested in each other as a man would a woman.
In order for this series to be considered a harem anime series is that there has to be some mutual affection between the main male character and the female characters.
What harem anime defines in not the main character having (potential) love interest in multiple girls (because there are also looser character who just have unrequitted love feelings for many girls), but its about multiple girls having love affection for the main character.

This article is a general one that applies to, as one might suspect, harem anime series.
Now, of course, there is infighting within the harem - any one girl would want to reach their optimal number of offspring, and it's tough to do that in human societies which frown on polygamy.
Perhaps this is why childhood friends in anime series manage to put up with the harem-building process (at least until they start to worry their position is really in jeapordy, at which point catfights ensue).

Be warned, this anime is full of weird adult humor and may not be suitable for everyone, but I really enjoyed watching the main story and the main characters.
At the beginning it seems like a cool anime, simply because of the fact that the female is kick ass and a guy is her sidekick.
Kaniduki was a pretty anime, and if you watch it for that quality then its okay, for anything else like character development, storyline, plot, or action I would probably recommend something else; although it is a short anime with only 12 episodes.

Death by Harem at hontou ni sou omou   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
I’ve always been fascinated as to how the etymology of the Arabic root of “harem” has meanings of the forbidden and the sacred; in contrast, when “harem” is used in English, it often connotes sexual licentiousness and epicurean excess.
The use of the term also creates its own sub-vocabulary such as “male harem lead” who is usually a loser who can’t decide on choosing one girl among the many - thus raising accusations of how harem anime series are essentially vehicles for otaku wish fulfillment.
Harem anime series certainly enjoy a certain degree of popularity because the sheer variety of heroine types will appeal to fans across a wide demographic.

The girls are constantly taking off their clothes, exposing their overly large breasts, which bounce all over the place, and when they're not nude, their clothes are falling or being ripped off, their breasts are being fondled by a school perv, or they are bent over for an unobstructed panty shot.
What really puts this anime over the top is a racy scene in episode 2 where Miharu discovers bananas and indulges her taste buds as she fondles, licks and sucks this tasty fruit.
Like the anime's contents, the video has an over-the-top exaggerated feel - with the girls in supersized proportions and the anime going chibi with the exaggerated facial expressions and gushing nose bleeds during the beat-em-up violence scenes.

When discussing the harem genre among those indifferent to it, the procedure generally involves promptly establishing that the vast, vast majority of harem anime are terrible, and then talking in terms of relatives.
However, its flaws are very different from the regulars of harem anime, choosing instead to go with its own set of sources of mundanity.
The side characters each carry their own burdens, and, in relatively standard harem form, are “fixed” by one of the two main protagonists and relegated to the sidelines.

Can The Harem Anime Genre Be Taken Seriously?
The whole concept, and indeed title of an anime being a "harem" anime is usually meant for either comedy or fanservice, and occasionally, a little bit of romance.
However, most harem anime will lean towards comedy, mainly because there are several issues with romance that may make the target audience turned off (remember, harem anime is, originally, meant for male fantasy-ishness, not really for the whole deep plot thing).
Of course, there are also romance anime with fanservice and angst, but even here you find no steady balance as well; those with more angst are usually more plot-based, those with more fanservice may actually fit better into the harem anime category (usually they involve more then one girl and have comedic moments).

The Male Harem Lead as the Key Variable at hontou ni sou omou   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Speaking of pervy teachers, our esteemed Academy Director Stripey made a strong claim that the male harem lead was the key variable in determining the success of a harem anime during the most recent Hontou Ni Staff Conference.
Stripey posited that a clearly unworthy harem lead would impact unfavourably on the desirability of the harem females; a lousy male harem lead would overwhelm other variables such as basis of attraction, character design, quality of animation, voice acting and so on.
The fundamental characteristic of a male lead in a harem comedy is that he has to be likable, and the viewer must be able to empathize with him on some level.

The quality is variable from incarnation to incarnation; the OVAs were witty, fun, and had a decent plot and dynamic enough characters that the harem formula barely matters; of course, keep in mind this was made when harem series weren't so disgustingly widespread.
Tenchi in Tokyo, on the other hand, is poorly animated, unfunny, and a complete mockery of the characters that were so beloved in the original, although it is definitely not without merit - I actually thought it had the strongest conclusion of the three main continuities.
