Neamţ County and Bacău County in the East.
Harghita's many spectacular natural features include Sfanta Ana Lake, a volcanic crater lake in the south of the county near Tuşnad, Lacu Roşu a mountain lake in the northeast near Gheorgheni, and nearby Cheile Bicazului, a dramatic, narrow canyon formed by the Bicaz stream.

In Harghita county can be found the only lake which has volcanic origin in Romania, the "Saint Ann" lake (Lacul Sfânta Ana - Szent Anna tó) situated in picturesque site, in the volcanic crater "Ciomatu" (Csomád) at an altitude of 950 m.
The population of Harghita county - at the end of 1994 - was 348,499 persons, from which 48.6% living in urban settlements and 54.4%.

In the last 3—4 years the brown bear population of Romania, inclusive of Harghita county one, was 60% diminuated because of the illegal administration of the stock of game by the National Forestry Administration and Romanian Hunting Association.
According to official statistics in 1988—89 the bear population in Romania was 7780 individuals, of wich 1185 one lived in Harghita county, region with typical ambient of the Carpathians.
Statistics from Harghita county is more alarming: in ten years the number of bears was 48% diminuated, that is to say from 1185 individuals in 1985 to 615 animals only in 1997.

The flash floods hit the eastern side of Harghita county particularly hard, devastating 15 villages and the administrative capital of the county, Odorheiu Secuiesc.
The flooding was most intense in the period from 24-25 August, when waves as high as four metres (13 feet) swept the town of Odorheiu Secuiesc and surrounding villages.
