 Harju County - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Harju County (Estonian: Harju maakond), or Harjumaa, is one of 15 counties of Estonia.
It is situated in northern Estonia, on the south coast of Gulf of Finland, and borders Lääne-Viru County to the east, Järva County to the south-east, Rapla County to the south, and Lääne County to the south-west.
The County Government (Estonian: Maavalitsus) is led by Governor (Estonian: maavanem), who is appointed by the Government of Estonia for a term of five years.

The Union of Harju County Municipalities (hereinafter: the Union), a voluntary association of the local authorities of Harju County (http://www.harju.ee), was launched on 10th April 1992 and registered in the Governor’s office on 29th December 1992.

The easternmost cup-marked stones in Harjumaa county are located on the premises of Hirvli village; in the area stretching further east to Kadrina parish in Virumaa county no cup-marked stones have been found.
The area richest in cup-marked stones in the county is in the vicinity of Kuiavere and Tääksi villages in Suure-Jaani parish, where the number of stones is six.
The number of stones with numerous cup-marks is the largest in Jüri parish in Harjumaa county: the stone Assaku Nõiakivi (Photo 3) has 405 cup-marks, a stone in Lehmja village has 150 marks, a stone in Jüri settlement has 102 cup-marks and a stone in Nabala village has 107 cup-marks (Figure 5; Harju county 2387).

The major fires occurred in Vihterpalu, Harju County, in 1992 and 1997, with almost 800 ha of forest burned in both cases.
The most extensive forest fire in 1999 took place in the vicinity of Narva (Ida-Viru County), where 400 ha of forest and peat bog that were to be turned into open-cast oil-shale pits caught on fire.
Management of state forests and detection of forest fires from observation towers is the responsibility of the State Forest Management Centre, a state for-profit institution under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Environment, as provided by the Forest Act.
