Assirat Al Mustaqim came to be known for the first time in December 2002, when 14 of its members were brought before the Casablanca court for "murder with premeditation and laying in wait for the victim".
The reference is to the Al Takfir Wal Hijra ("Exile and Anathema" or "Repentance and Atonement") network, spread from Piedmont to Sicily, reared in the viscerally anti-Western credo of its forefather, Savd Qurb, shot to death in the 1960s for his ostracism of the Egyptian policy.
The struggle to identify Al Qaeda commanders in the 1990s, a process spelled out in the new memoir of former counterterrorism chief Richard A. Clarke, demonstrates the difficulty in going after what is now a much less organized, but still deadly, movement, according to intelligence officials.

While the Al Qaeda/IIF elements operate under the acknowledged leadership of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, no details are available about the leadership of the Iraqi resistance fighters.
