Collins' wife reported to Walsh that the singer preferred the term "The King of Ragtime Songs" to "coon singer." Nonetheless, he was regularly marketed as a "coon singer" in trade publications.
Harlan was one of the quartet tenors (Natus was the other; A.D. Madeira was bass), and Collins and Harlan possibly first sang together at a recording session as members of this Edison quartet.
Collins remained with the Peerless for a decade and toured with a group known in the World War I era as the Record Makers, later as the Victor Record Makers (after Collins had left, it was called the Eight Famous Victor Artists, then the Eight Popular Victor Artists).

Harlan had learned the milling business thoroughly in the noted White Water mill, situated near Connersville, Fayette county, Indiana, which was patronized at a very early day by Hancock county's pioneers.
Harlan immediately erected a larger and better mill, one-fourth mile distant, which was run by an overshot wheel.
The logs were donated by Stephen Harlan and Moses McCray, and the church was erected on a little knoll in the southwest corner of the present cemetery boundaries.

Irving Berlin's 1911 "Alexander's Ragtime Band" is a prototype--even here Collins and Harlan played a part, deserving much credit for popularizing the tune since their Victor recording of it (16908) was among the best-selling discs of that decade (Eddie Morton's "Oceana Roll" on the other side did not hurt sales).
On the other hand, Collins as a solo artist cut "That Funny Jas Band From Dixieland" for various small record companies throughout 1917, and it is possible that he played with the melody in significant ways (these records-- Operaphone, for example--are incredibly rare).

This mill, owned by the Portland-based Collins Companies, is one of only a handful in eastern Oregon that have survived the last decade, thanks to the ingenuity — and the chutzpah — of the residents of this tiny town of 2,500.
Paul Harlan and Collins Company practice eco-friendly forest management on the company’s private timber lands, which were some of the first in the nation to win "green" certification from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) (HCN, 6/24/02: Can green-certified lumber make it?).
To augment the timber coming off nearby forests, Collins is importing logs from other areas where mills have gone belly-up, says Harlan, who was recently elected to his second term as president of the U.S. board of the Forest Stewardship Council.
