  John Marshall Harlan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Harlan graduated from Centre College, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi, and began his career by joining his father's law practice in 1852.
Harlan was elected county judge of Franklin County, Kentucky in 1858.
Harlan joined the Republican party in 1868 and remained a Republican for the rest of his life, and, befitting his new party, he turned strongly against slavery, calling it "the most perfect despotism that ever existed on this earth." He ran for governor in 1871 and 1875, losing both times.

In 1949, President Harry S. Truman nominated Matthews to the D.C. Circuit Court, where, as the first woman appointed to be a federal district court judge, she continued her advocacy of women's rights by only hiring female law clerks.
She knows that Harlan and Matthews, whose footsteps Justice Ginsburg followed by being appointed to the D.C. Court of Appeals, would take pride in the fact that two of the nine Supreme Court Justices are women, a fact that would not have seemed possible during those earlier women's lives.

After working for many years in the jazz-fusion genre, his style has mellowed into more of a funk/jazz/world/folk mixture, often finding him playing bass more like a piano (multiple layers of parts being played by each hand independently), and singing on top simultaneously.
