 Answer to Question #12
Harlech Castle was held by the Lancastrians against the Yorkists during the War of the Roses in the 15th century, and by the Royalists against Parliamentary forces during the English Civil War of the mid-17th century, in what are probably the two most celebrated sieges in Welsh history.
When Harlech was built in the late 13th century the back of the castle was accessible from the water, however over the years the sea receded and today Harlech is very much surrounded by dry land.
"Singing the praises" of the castle refers to the popular song "Men of Harlech" which supposedly celebrates the bravery of the castle's Royalist forces during the aforementioned the Civil War siege.
