After a competition, the route was formally named the London Outer Orbital Path, and although you may sometimes see this version, or as initials LOOP, the route is popularly known and shown on Ordnance Survey maps as the London Loop.
The first of the 24 sections (Section 5) was opened on 3 May 1996, with a ceremony on Farthing Downs, and other sections have followed at the rate of two or three per year as signs are installed and leaflets for individual sections are published.
