Harlock Saga - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Harlock Saga is a six-part anime miniseries (three hours in total length) by Leiji Matsumoto.
Harlock Saga: The Valkyrie (3 volumes) is the first of a two-part story dealing largely with the events surrounding the epic voyage and subsequent death of Great Harlock, Captain Harlock's father, in 2964 AD.
Harlock Saga: Siegfried (3 volumes) is the second of a two-part story dealing with the adventures of Great Harlock.

 Harlock Saga
Although there are some significant glitches in Harlock Saga, it's still an entertaining dive into the world of the space pirate who embodies the "live free or die" ethic.
Harlock barely appears in the first episode and has only a minor role in the second.
Harlock Saga is not the best of Matsumoto's work, but it is a good intro to the characters and is not a bad way to spend three hours.

Anime Chat Forums - Harlock Saga
Harlock Saga is an innovative way of retelling the story of "Der Ring Das Nibelungen" roughly translated as The Ring of the Nibelung (originally written by Richard Wagner as an opera) in an anime action/adventure/drama.
According to the legend (that is told by Harlock Saga), if Alberich of the Nibelung clan were to use the ring to destroy Valhalla, he could return the Universe to its primordial beginnings.
Harlock Saga is rated 13 years and up and it is doubtful that you will be able to see this story on international television (except for maybe on a Showtime channel called Action).

 Captain Harlock
Harlock's flag is the pirate jolly roger flag, and to him it represents freedom and the fighting spirit.
However, Harlock's first encounter with Meeme is in a totally different setting in The Arcadia of My Youth, and in the newer Harlock Saga, she has morphed completely into a near-immortal sorceress who has battled the ancient gods for countless years and helped shaped humanity.
The initial protagonist of the most well-known Harlock plot (the TV series and Harlock manga) is a young man named "Daiba Tadashi," the son of two scientists (he's also completely different in Harlock Saga).

I am not sure exactly what I expected when I picked ´The Harlock Saga´ out to watch, other than a popular Japanese anime, but I have to admit that I was unprepared to find myself watching a version of Wagner´s ´Ring of the Nibelung´ recast as a space adventure in the far future.
Harlock (actually the son of Leiji Matsumoto´s original Harlock) is the captain of the Arcadia, a space pirate vessel.

Fortunately for the uninitiated viewer, Harlock Saga is essentially a sci-fi retelling of Wagner's most famous opera, The Ring of the Neibelung.
Harlock Saga is a little slow in the end and far from the best introduction to Matsumoto's universe, but it is quite watchable even for the uninitiated as long as you're willing to give a piece of broad, classically-styled space fantasy a shot.

THEM Anime Reviews 4.0 - Captain Harlock: Endless Odyssey
Captain Harlock is probably known by Matsumoto fans as one of the most badass characters in the Leijiverse.
After all, Harlock is a wanted man, and the first episode thus begins with the arrest of Kei, one of Harlock's crew.
Harlock is practically invincible and deals with every crisis the same way; by walking straight into it and bitch-slapping everyone into submission (both literally and metaphorically.) It's cool to see him do that, of course, but it does remove a lot of tension from the show itself.

Harlock Saga is, even with its many faults, an OVA worthy of your time and money, especially if you're a fan of Matsumoto Leiji's creations.
From Harlock to Emeraldas to Meeme to the cookie-cutter side characters, lines are delivered like they were read from a script for the first time with nary an expression on anyone's face (unless you count the cold, dead stare of a fish on a dinner table as an expression).
Harlock's ship Arcadia is even done in 3D for the first OVA, but the result is so poor that the vessel is hand-drawn for the rest of the series.

Harlock premiered on Japanese television in a 42 episode TV series titled Space Pirate Captain Harlock on March 14, 1978.
Following up the success of Robotech, Captain Harlock & The Queen of a Thousand Years took the original 1978 Harlock TV series and the 1981 Millennium Queen TV series and patched together into a single ill-conceived amorphous series, even though the original Japanese series were totally unrelated and had no common characters between them.
In 1999 Harlock returned in a new 6 episode OAV series titled Harlock Saga: Der Ring Des Nibelungen Das Rhein Gold, a loose sci-fi interpretation of the opera by Wagner that told the story of an attempt to overthrow the gods of Valhalla.

This 3 hour mini-series is essentially a retelling of Das Rheingold, but in the sci-fi setting of the Captain Harlock universe.
Das Rheingold is the first part of the famous der Ring des Nibelungen, or "Ring Saga" - a series of four operas based on German folklore composed by Richard Wagner between 1848 and 1874.
In Das Rheingold, Alberich sets into motion the events of the saga by stealing the magical gold which can grant the power to rule the world to one who sacrifices love.

Brief background: Harlock and his crew of 3 (yes, as far as I could tell, just 3) humans fly a giant battleship- shaped spaceship through the universe.
I won't even mention Harlock's plan to return a powerful artifact to a group of people (who are now dead) on a distant planet (which has been destroyed).

DVD Verdict Review - Harlock Saga
Harlock Saga (also called The Rhein Gold) borrows its plot from Richard Wagner's formidable Ring of the Nibelungen tetralogy (or, as a Fox marketing executive might dub it, his "quadrilogy").
Meeme also happens to be a pal of Captain Harlock, famous space pirate, and she enlists the crew of the Arcadia (Harlock's spaceship) to help her stop Alberich's scheme to conquer the gods.
Longtime Harlock fans will find this all frustrating as well, since the continuity is often at odds with the established Harlock universe.

While Harlock saga is the product of newer animation techniques it still manages to stay true to the character designs that have been used since the early seventies.

This doesn't mean that all the past stories somehow come together to fit like pieces in a four-dimensional jigsaw puzzle, but rather that the concepts from those stories would all be represented in one story, which of course meant rewriting most all of them.
We now see that Harlock, Tochiro, and Emeraldas grew up together from their early childhood, instead of just Harlock and Tochiro (as in Space Pirate.) Both versions of the Arcadia would appear, but the old, blue Arcadia would now become Pirate Island number two, and...you can see where this is headed.

 AAW: Harlock Saga Quicklook
Harlock Saga is essentially a sci-fi retelling of Wagner's most famous opera, The Ring of the Neibelung, set in Matsumoto's vast universe and cast with his standard set of characters.
The only other weakness is the voice acting which, with the exception of Kouichi Yamadera's impressive portrayal of both stoic Harlock and quirky Tochiro, is unimpressive in both languages.
Though far from the best introduction to Matsumoto's universe, Harlock Saga is quite watchable even for the uninitiated as long as you're willing to give a piece of broad, classically-styled space fantasy a shot, and it's also fun as a re-interpretation of of a classic into a true space opera.

In 2000 Takeuchi Nobuo made Harlock Saga: Ring of the Nibelung in a rather faithful Matsumotonian atmosphere, but with his own plans for the veteran characters.
The Matsumotonian set is almost invariably dark, since it is about space pirates of whichever future time (2977, when Harlock started out); the good ol' lure of space odyssey is hereby exploited once more.
I guess as far as I have known, Matsumoto's outer space is the best in bottling the essence of The Unknown for instant rethinking -- the animated version of the tale is also the same.
