Jean Harlow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Harlow shot to fame in the early 1930s starring in hits such as "Hell's Angels" and "The Public Enemy" and would die within the same decade at the height of her career of kidney failure.
Harlow was born Harlean Carpenter in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Mont Clair Carpenter, a dentist, and his wife, Jean Poe Harlow.
Harlow fell ill with influenza during the early part of 1937; although she recovered, the attack weakened her body against the onslaught of a more serious illness that was just beginning to take hold: kidney failure.

Harlow would begin his experiments by separating the infant monkeys from their mothers and peers, and he noticed that the infants, when separated, became extremely attached to the terry cloth towels covering the cage floors.
Harlow was establishing that love grows from touch, not taste, which is why, when the mother's milk dries up, the child continues to love her.

Adoption History: Harry Harlow, Monkey Love Experiments
Harlow’s first observation was that monkeys who had a choice of mothers spent far more time clinging to the terry cloth surrogates, even when their physical nourishment came from bottles mounted on the bare wire mothers.
Harlow theorized that they used their mothers as a “psychological base of operations,” allowing them to remain playful and inquisitive after the initial fright had subsided.
Yet Harlow’s data confirmed the well known psychoanalytic emphasis on the mother-child relationship at the dawn of life, and his research reflected the repudiation of eugenics and the triumph of therapeutic approaches already well underway throughout the human sciences and clinical professions by midcentury.

Harlow recounts in the disc liner notes that four more vocal compositions were omitted from this project.
But perhaps most importantly, after many years of Harlow’s honing his chops in bands such as the Ken Hadley big Band locally, and the Glenn Miller and Artie Shaw Orchestras nationally and globally, the saxophonist’s debut disc brings him to the juncture where he is finding his own voice as a bandleader and jazz artist.
Although this is his initial recording as a leader, Harlow appears to have already paid some dues both in the formal classroom and on the road with the big band pros.
