  HARMAL, Edward
Edward J. Harmal was born in Obornick, Germany, on April 12, 1851, and departed this life last Sunday afternoon, May 8, at the home of his sons in West Sebewa.
He received his education and early Christian training in the parental home and in the common schools of his native country, and when he had attained to manhood, was united in holy wedlock to Miss Anna Emilie Hackett in the year 1875.
Harmal never was sick, but in the last months of his life the infirmities of old age became more pronounced so he was confined to the house and later to his bed, where he was tenderly cared for by his children.

Talk:Harmal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Harmal is what it is called in my botanical textbooks (they don't even mention 'Syrian Rue').
I consider such sources far more authoritative than a google hit count, which is widely cited on wikipedia as a poor means for making decisions.
Harmal is also unique, distinct, and avoids confusion, while 'Syrian rue' could mean any species of Ruta found in Syria, not necessarily this species - MPF 23:52, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

Aspand - Espand - Esfand - Esphand Against the Evil Eye in Zoroastrian Magic
In the USA its most common name is "Syrian Rue," a highly unfortunate monicker since although the leaves of the two plants are similar, Aspand is not related to Rue (Ruta graveolens) and it is not notable for growing in Syria, but rather in Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and India.
In addition to its use in the Aspand ritual, the seeds of the pant are used to make a red dye and are used medicinally to alleviate certain skin diseases.
Aspand seed is the richest natural source of two alkaloids, harmine and harmaline (their names come from the Indian name for the plant, Harmal).
