Harold Baines - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Harold Douglass Baines (born March 15, 1959 in Easton, Maryland) is a former right fielder and designated hitter in Major League Baseball who played in the American League from 1980 to 2001, and is best known for his three stints with the Chicago White Sox.
Baines began his career with the White Sox as the number-one pick in the amateur draft in 1977, after being spotted by then-White Sox owner Bill Veeck while playing Little League ball at the age of 12.
Prior to the 1993 season, Baines was traded by the A's to the Baltimore Orioles for minor league pitchers Bobby Chouinard and Allen Plaster.

Harold Baines - BR Bullpen   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Baines was considered a good right fielder with a strong arm early in his career, but never had much foot speed, and a knee injury he suffered at the end of 1986 relegated him to DH work for the rest of his career.
Baines was the number one overall pick in the June 1977 amateur draft by the White Sox after batting.532 in his senior year at St. Michaels (Md.) High School (Baines continues to reside in St. Michaels to this day).
Baines got off to a blistering start for the moribund 1989 White Sox, ranking among the league leaders in batting average and making the All-Star team, and on July 30, he was traded to the Rangers with Fred Manrique for Scott Fletcher and two minor league prospects, Wilson Alvarez and Sammy Sosa.

Baseball Fever - which team for Baines?
Baines had a fine, long career and was an excellent hitter in his prime, but comes up short in terms of the Hall of Fame, IMO.
Harold had a long career and came up short of 3000 hits (he had 2866) but he did finish with 1628 career RBI's and every retired player, with the exception of Cal Ripken Jr., with at least 1600 RBIs is a member of the HOF.
Harold Baines is the only player in history whose number was retired while he was still active -- with another team.

One of the finest pure hitters of his time, Baines was a 12-year-old little leaguer in Easton, MD when he caught the eye of White Sox owner Bill Veeck.
Baines stung the ball at a.440 clip and belted a ninth-inning homer off Jack Morris to win Game One, but the Athletics lost to Toronto in six games.
Baines returned to the White Sox as a free agent in 1996, where he enjoyed another banner year, blasting 22 homers and driving in 95 runs while batting.311.

Why Harold Baines Shouldn't Make the Baseball Hall of Fame
Baines certainly wasn't the best AL outfielder in his prime (early to mid 80s).
Baines made the playoffs 5 years, 1983, 1990, 1992, 1997 and 1999.
Baines scores a 39 on the Hall of Fame standards test (average Hall of Famers score a 50).

 THE SOUTH SIDER
If we want to measure Harold Baines as a Hall candidate, the first good test is to look at how he matches up with his "semi-contemporaries" who are already in the Hall.
Baines' semi-contemporaries in Cooperstown are Dave Winfield, Reggie Jackson, Robin Yount, Paul Molitor, George Brett, Tony Perez, Eddie Murray, Kirby Puckett and Mike Schmidt.
The first objection offered against Harold Baines is that he spent most of his career as a designated hitter after multiple knee surgeries took him out of right field.

And if Baines, with 2,845 hits, keeps going, he may eventually be the answer to one of the most argued statistical oddities of the 21st century: Who is the only player with 3,000 hits not elected to the Hall of Fame?
And there may be the greatest irony of all when one considers that Baines should have been out of the game a decade ago because of knee problems.
Tuesday night, in Debut III with the White Sox, in typical Baines fashion, he went 2 for 4 with a run batted in in a 4-3 win in Texas.
